Why do Americans calls Latinos "Spanish"?

I've seen a lot of dudes say "my girl is Spanish" but she is actually from like Mexico. She is Hispanic not Spanish

Spain is in Europe.

Its because we live next to Mexico and they think Spanish is a BROWN person language

Its why they are always shocked when they see a white person speaking Spanish, im like why is it shocking Spanish is a white language its from Europe smh

But its just what they grew up on seeing mostly dark Mexicans speaking Spanish so they call them Spanish.

I remember some White girl in high school being shocked when our teacher showed us a video tour of Spain and the majority of people looked white many had light brown to blond hair and light eyes and the white girl was like wtf? she tought all Spaniards were supposed to look like the mestizo Mexicans.

Makes sense lol...but Spain owned a lot of the western US, is that not covered in history?

Of course not all Spanish look light eyed etc, a lot of them too look latino per se. The Galicia area and where the celtics/vikings touched is lighter.

Spanish people are also generally taller.

Spanish owned a lot of the west especially California, area, and Mexico, but we only see what we see daily and they see these people speaking Spanish because thats who is closes to us. Its why Americans get shocked if they see a white person especially light hair and light eyes speaking spanish.

When I was in San Diego, I saw a lot of Mexicans that looked quite light and tall. Is it different in the rest of California/Arizona?

Im half white half Mexican with green eyes, most Mexicans look like the ones I posted herein California, new mexico, texas, maybe now they look mixed but int he 80s and 90s most of them were darker featured like Indios.

they speak spanish retard and spain hasnt been relevant for 300+ years.

America is like 30% illegal undocumented immigrants speaking spanish. They have like 20 of them in the same house. They dont fill out the census. Those are the only "spanish" that are important in the US.

My brother people from Spain are the only Hispanics. Mexico, central and South America are all Latinos. Or like 99% Latinos as there are sections in each country where you’ll find Hispanics that barely mixed with the native population.

Also someone said you used Latinx, which is a neggable offense due to excessive gayness.

Off topic but there’s a famous town in Mexico called Mineral Del Monte where a lot of the people are white, but not because of Spanish conquistadors. The Brit’s of all people settled it a long time ago, and the people are there are white people who speak spanish. Also the elevation is 9-10k feet.

I used to work with a guy originally from Mexico. His parents had moved there from Spain during the Spanish Revolution and he always made sure to tell people he was "Spanish Mexican". LOL

Now the real question is why do Hispanics refer to all white people as "Anglo" when most of us don't have roots in England?
