They're pretty unique in the respect that the drummer essentially plays lead and maynards vocals as rhythm - bass and guitar seem to generally take a backseat

No argument here though that danny carey is a ****ing beast

lateralus is good all the way through, its more of a concept album tho in that it really needs to be listened through from beginning to end

everything i've heard from tool seems like guys jerking themselves off. it's like they are one side of the coin and phish is the other.

They're objectively bad.

For me it's a strange thing, i like some stuff, don't like some other stuff and in the end i don't listen to them that much although they're on my playlist with a good chunk of songs.

''Right in two'' is great IMHO, tho

Mediocre as fuk. Annoying vocals / lyrics, nonexistent guitars, and every song is the same "tribal drums + decent bassline" paradigm. It's like one song that plays over and over.
I think they need better editors. They'd be much more tolerable if they didn't turn 20 second ideas into 9 minute songs.
And I genuinely love songs that are 20+ minutes. Prog metal, '70s prog rock, and hippie jam bands are just way more varied in ideas. Tool is one idea repeating long enough to entrance listeners. Not for me.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Undertow=few good songs, would probably appreciate more if I was a fan when it released. Fear Incoculum- Pretty much the same as Undertow, one or two good songs but nothing even close to Lateralus or 10,000 Days

Listening to The Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle right now on vinyl. I'd take this over a lot of Tool stuff.

Loved it when I was a teenager. Listening to it now makes me cringe, but theres some good songs. Tool is one of those bands that suffers from having obnoxious cult like fans. Maynard is a bit of a blowhard too.

Tool's music is great but they're 'prog' posterboys. Like the modern Pink Floyd. Every era has one. They have their sound but they aren't my personal favorite. Having said that, ripping through Aenima and Schism on bass is a lot of fun.

If musical taste is purely subjective, how can a band beobjectivelybad? How can you quantify that?

*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*

*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*

Would agree with this. I think if the original bassist stuck around they might have been a totally different band. Tool are talented but feel like they have a narrow lane they don't get out of too much.

They're pretty mediocre, not songs I enjoy listening to on repeat. Generally when they pop up in my Spotify playlist I skip. The problem is their songs are too long and repetitive

I love A PERFECT CIRCLE.

it's better to suck dink than to be killed

"My outer appearance was poor, but in this way my inner world became richer than anyone else's. Was it not natural that a young boy who suffered from an indelible drawback like mine should have come to think that he was a secretly chosen being?
