Miscers with small children GTFIH

After seeing this posted on the misc a few weeks ago I can't stop thinking about it.

Some accident's are unavoidable no matter how careful no one could have seen this comming.

We currently drive this.



Functionally it works well. 1 toddler and expecting in OCT.

Been looking into getting something more robust for side collision. Considering either a 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey or 2000-2007 Suburban. (leaning towards the burb)

This one is for sale locally 166,000 KMS (not miles) wants 11k CAD I think I could get him way down 7-8k range.


What does the misc think the best family carrier would be in a side collision?



The sliding auto sliding doors + better MPG and resale are pretty big pro's for the Honda. The 4x4 and overall more capable/cool factor goes to the Burb.

Other vehicle recs welcome price range is CEO assistant 350 CAD/day.

I'm not a fan of minivans, but I'd take the Honda over the burb in terms of safety and reliability.

We looked at the G and didn't like it. IMO the V is far more family friendly.

Pilot/ Odyssey.. bought both brand new and i'd pick the Odyssey any day over the Pilot , just that its so pricey now brand new prob 60K for the tournig model, you can't even get great deals on used ones at the moment . I no longer own them since my kids are now grown .

I know it gets schit on but the Dodge Grand Caravan ain't half bad. Couldn't give a chit about "looks" so was an easy choice considering price and I dig the stow and go seats.
Virtue is its own reward.

I've considered for the price and the fact the bastards have the patent for stow and go but I am in the market for used. I don't trust dodge/Chrysler enough to buy a used one. I would buy a new dodge/Chrysler and get rid of it out of warranty though.

crew cab pickup truck is the safest vehicle you can put your kids in. I've hit a deer in a nissan rogue and the thing damn near exploded. Hit another deer in my f150 and it cracked the bumper but obliterated the deer.

I think the Audi's have been to rated for side collisions for the past few years.

Dunno what those are going for used, but the 2017 was rated really well.

If you are worried about safety buy a newer car. Youre shopping for rust buckets in early 2000s to penny pinch and then worrying about safety. More likely to have an issue with braking, car failure etc that will put your family at risk.

The big that that surprised me was middle being safer than the sides using a seatbelt versus the clamps. I guess makes sense for side collisions too.

Not buying a rust bucket. I can't afford new I understand and accept I have a budget. I ensure my vehicles have new tires brakes etc.

I would think any vehicle that is on the bigger side and has side air bags. I had an Odyssey when my son was little and loved it. It was great having so much seating to take friends/cousins with us instead of using multiple cars.

Not only should you think about vehicle safety reviews but also carseat safety reviews and installation. I was a certified CPS carseat tech when my son was little. You really need to make sure the seat is installed correctly and the child is belted in correctly. You wouldn't believe how many people have carseats incorrectly installed and how many don't have the straps snug enough. You want to keep your kid(s) rear facing for as long as possible. Once they're older you also should make sure they're in a good booster until they're big enough/tall enough to not have the seat belts be a danger to them.

If the person knows the value of a Honda Odyssey (likely) you wont get them much lower than that 11k, that aint no Dodge Caravan.

I have been following this thread the last day or so, and just popped in to mention tires. My wife was involved in a nasty crash on the freeway several years ago with all the kids. She was in our AWD sienna and there was a rapid slow down in front of her. She managed to barely stop, but the cars behind her didn't. She got rear ended and then pushed into the care in front of her. Everyone was fine, the van was totaled. She was not assigned any blame because she got stopped. If she had it the car in front of her before getting hit from behind, it probably would have been different. Not all tires are created with respect to stopping on different surfaces. Don't know enough about side impact to give a recommendation, sorry. We replaced the Sienna with an Odyssey. We've liked both, but my wife and I both had a small preference for the Sienna.

Honda Pilot or truck based SUV. Honda pilot is just a glorified minivan with some perks. Can get in AWD, full size spare tire fits, and reliable as any Honda too.

An Odyssey is our next likely vehicle now as well. Never thought I'd even consider it, but here we are with 3 kids. They're less goofy than the wood paneled station wagon we had when I was a kid, so oh well.
