My water heater broke and got it replaced (absolutely haram)

My water heater stopped working. It's still under warranty so I get a free replacement. Nice.

Labor $475
Swapping water heater fee $30 (da fuq)
New cold and hot water lines $30

I paid more for labor than what the actual water heater cost. LOL

At least I have hot water again. honk honk

Took them 1.5 hours to do the job. My buddy is a licensed plumber and could have helped me do the swap, but I didn't want to risk it and didn't feel like messing with that. I'm getting over COVID and don't feel 100% yet.

So what was the actual cost of the water heater itself? Sounds like the whole project ran you about a $1k, which is well within the standard price range for that. It sucks, but yeah you're gonna pay good money to have someone come in and just magically make it all work for you. I'm not saything that to crticize you either, but you gotta look at it from their perspective too. They need to get paid to justify running their business, breh. So as long as they don't try to really F you over somehow with some sort of shady business practice, I wouldn't put that much thought into it.

The problem with people bitching about stuff like that is that often times, people only consider the literal amount of time a tradie spends at their home (the job site) actively doing the work. They don't consider things like drive time too and from their shop or around town, etc.

I had a water heater installed when mine went out a year or so ago, and it ran me about $1k. I'd say the entire thing probably took the tradie about 2.5 - 3 hours from start to finish if you factor in about an hour for drive time. Plus, people tend to forget that there is always going to be a price to pay for that kind of convenience. Imagine if you wanted some McPoverty's or something and decided to pay an Uber or something to run and get it for you... of course you wouldn't be too shocked to see a $10 bill turn into $20+ after factoring in paying a driver to fetch it for you.

Now apply that to some tradie showing up at your home within hours of calling them to replace a water heater or whatever (water heater installation tradies are typically pretty well available knowing that most of their jobs are emergency based jobs requiring immediate attention). So you not have to worry about going out to find a water heater somewhere, loading up it up and hauling it away, installing the new one, or getting rid of the old one. No chit that's gonna be expensive compared to handling it completely on your own...

I didn't have to pay for the water heater as it was a warranty replacment. I just didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of loading up the busted water heater and installing a new one. I do most of my mechanical repairs and DIY repairs but I decided to foot the bill for this one out of convenience. LOL @ all you cheapcells.

I bought a house as is and flipped it, the only thing it had wrong was it had an old af Montgomery Ward hot water heater that went to chit. Spent $500 at lowes for a new one, roped it into the attic myself and hooked it up.

If you got charged $1k+ for a new water heater after factoring in the water heater itself apparently being covered 100% by manufacturer warranty, then yeah, that tradie/his company bent you over and took that angus to pound town. With all cost of parts/materials to swap the new one in being covered, that shouldn't have costed you more than like $500 - $600 for just the labor/time it took the tradie to do it.

Also, why are you yapping about other posters being cheapcels itt? The entire premise of your thread was based on you feeling like you were getting screwed over on the pricing of your new water heater. Which you did in fact get screwed if the situation went down exactly like you went on to explain it did, unless you live in NYC or something where everything costs 50% - 200%+ more than it does most places.

My water heaters are in one of my walk in attics. No way do I feel like getting them down the stairs.

After OP explained that he paid north of $1k despite the old water heater supposedly having been covered under manufacturer warranty, and then seeing that halfasssed water heater installation job, it looks like OP got hosed hard all around. Not factoring in the cost of a new water heater itself, that chitty install job wasn't worth more than $300 - $400 even by price guaging plumber standards in my area lol.

I'd constantly have bad anxiety issues having a water heater installed in an attic, even in a warm weather area where that's kind of a viable option in the first place. All it would take is the slightest thing to go wrong causing a small leak from the tank, and you'd be royally fukked fast.
