Should I become a tradie? srs

Considering dropping out of chemistry. No inner 'passion' for it, and it isn't great job wise, and I don't want to do masters/phd or have real aspirations for a different grad school field. Don't want to stay in and dig a debt hole + waste a year.

Tried programming and web development courses for a few months before deciding I don't want that.

I don't hate manual labour. Prefer smaller cities if possible too. Is tradie the logical next step? Dead serious, what should I consider getting into fieldwise?

also, just lol @ me srs

It's not impulsive thinking, been considering this for a while. I've never been certain about chem anyway. I perform well in it but I don't know if it's worth it.

No. Just look at MBson. You'll end up bitter and angry at life just like him and become extremely defensive when you're called out for being a tradie. You'll lack a complete sense of humor and slowly die inside because all you'll look forward to is crushing Natties on the weekends.

I make more than most of my aquantances with college degrees. Key is, learn a trade, then start your own business if you're competent enough. Business owners make the money. If not, at least find a useful trade. Sparky, Operator, or HVAC are the best. Plumber isnt bad if you don't mind working in chit. Don't learn a druggie trade like paint, finisher, or carpenter.

Some of it's paid for but not all + then I'm not making money studying and it might not pay off in any way. I also dun goof if I do chem for a couple years and end up with some debt + little savings + relatively niche/low pay job/isolated to large companies in high COL areas.

You could be right too, but no one knows how it'll turn out.

thing is, there are a lot of different ways as a tradie. and the construction industry is huge - there are all of the organizational aspects to it as well. as well as chit like surveying, project management, architects, etc., etc.

being an apprentice in a union is different than if you go private as well.

as a non journeyman with electrical you're considered an "apprentice". but really an "apprenticeship" is usually through a union. an "apprentice" in the private sector may be called something different. you have to pass your states journeymans license after 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on the job training and school to be called a "journeyman".

you could also go through an apprenticeship after 5 years and be consired a "journeyman" through the union but i dont think you're necessarily a "journeyman" via the state. but you would be getting work through the union hall so it wouldn't matter

however you can also work under a master electrician in the private sector where the "master" is supposed to "supervise" your work. really if there's any trouble it will come down to him and his insurance

a union's education and work will be far more thorough than anything else but its not always easy getting into a union. it takes months and a test and an interview and then you get put on a list in rank and then you're called based on how much work that union has and where you are ranked on the list

i think union is the best way to go but as i said.. may not always be plausible. i liked what i did with trade school in that i was able to learn a lot, even though its different from the field. but it taught me foundational chit that i think would be hard to learn in the field and or not in an apprenticeship. for instance, a lot of electricians may know x wire goes here but not everything going on

im trying to keep this post not intricate so as to not overwhelm. but then unions have things called "cw's" and "ce's" which in a nutshell are ways to get cheaper labor. unions can enforce them without having to pay for benefits + schooling and at cheaper costs originally, but if you have hours in the construction industry, you may bee able to start out a higher rate than you would if you were a 1st year apprentice.

but then those guys don't get the schooling and then they can't pass the journeymans test. so they never got into the apprenticeship and then never got the education and in order to be journeyman they have to test in, but without the education they can't test in

anyway, this is just electrical. i think plumbers and hvac's have apprenticeships but im not sure if they are as thorough or take as long.

my ideal would be to somehow be electrical journeyman and be in the elevator union

Go where you have the passion for. As long as you can make money out of it and you are happy.

HVAC is always good, plumbing, welding seems to be big and can be very versatile in many industries.

Honestly I wish I did something similar instead of going to college and mindlessly trying to figure out what the hell to do.

But you live and learn.
