Of course. Putin is so deep into the sunk cost fallacy he can't get out, and he has no problem with throwing more bodies into the meatgrinder where any non-sociopath would have given up months ago. Three things that will end it:
1. Russia is running out actual trained military and resorting to conscript-cels to make up the diminishing infantry.
2. Running out of heavy material they can't replace at rates they're losing.
3. Running out of foreign dollars. Needed to fight and also to prop up the Ruble, and when they can't afford this supply/demand just sets the value and Ruble is worthless. Half their war chest is frozen, billions is in gold they'd never touch, and 150 bill is spent. They're bleeding big time and the energy revenues are just a bandaid on an open wound. As long as the sanctions are in place, the bandage can't stem the flow and will end the invasion.

We're all in a tail spin while false hope is given to a war front that the truth cannot break out to the public due to these same nation's involvement saving embarrassment.
We are empowering Russia and China and weakening and splintering Europe. At this very moment we are asking European people to decimate their economies in an attempt to break Russia.
What happens if we don't break Russia and we break Europe? It's looking that way to me as a real possibility.

Flat. Probably 4-5k dead. Huge mistake attempting to rush a heavily mined flat plane with overwhelming artillery from that same direction.

As far as Odessa that may be a wrap on the failure Ukraine experienced there. I cannot see how they can defend the land to Odessa with the current Russian strategy. There are numerous reinforcements inbound along with the 3rd Brigade already in place.
So no. Ukrainian has had success for the first time in the east and it is the beginning of it so do not get too happy yet but it is very noteworthy and will be a success if they can hold onto it and keep the lines open.
And no. Russia was not "smashed" in the south. It was a slaughter over the last week 10-15 casualties, 5k dead.

OK so what if a country has a coup and passes racist laws, and people want to secede? Why defend sovereignty then? The sovereignty of Ukraine ended during the revolution. Kotkin didn't think Putin would invade, and now he is acting like it is totally obvious and predictable. What about how Putin was on a timer? What about the literal fascists in Ukraine? What about all the times the Kremlin fuking helped us? Kotkin is fuking wrong. He's repeating the same chit everyone has. He's missing the threat NATO presents. He's missing the threat the nazis in Ukraine present. He's missing the damn history of the Crimean war and why Crimea and access to the Black Sea matters. We saw Putin WAIT 8 years and try 29 times for peace. He could have totally smashed Ukraine in 2014. This was not a choice. It was a security trap for Putin. We were arming Ukraine. They were building up. If Putin had not acted, he'd eventually lose Crimea and face potential terrorism staged from Ukraine, along with a permanent hostile foe blocking their access to the Black Sea, which then disrupts Russia's trade and military strategies with countries like Syria."Muh Nato, Muh Ukraine"
Vatnik arguments getting destroyed
This is from Carnegie Endowment:
"Moscow depends on the Black Sea for access to the Mediterranean and beyond, both for military operations outside its immediate neighborhood and for exports of Russia’s main commodity (hydrocarbons). Moscow sees the Mediterranean as largely NATO-dominated, but it hopes to spot opportunities to make political, economic, and military inroads with key regional states, as it has done in Syria. For example, Russia eyes opportunities to expand its influence in Mediterranean countries like Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Libya, and Turkey."
I have listened to Kotkin's work for many hours. He is an expert on Stalin, but he is biased in seeing things from Stalin's POV. He is not a historian of Putin. Ukraine was being armed and becoming a DE FACTO NATO partner. And it is not their free choice. The whole point is that NATO isn't a cool kid club. It is a security organization. Bringing it to Russia's doorstep with a hostile regime is the very definition of provocation. Putin would have been committing malfeasance if he did nothing. He had no choice. The realists are right. Kotkin's wrong. The real world works like this. The international laws only work when the parties involved feel their security concerns are met and they can resolve disputes in a fair and just manner without being threatened. Treaties, law, and institutions are tools and means to ends, not ends in and of themselves. The end is always PEACE and security.
A Russian scholar said "We want them to implement Minsk 2, but if not, there is always plan B." He said this a month before the attack. Plan B is always a fuking option. Plan B is how the world actually works. Realism never goes away. Liberalism and those institutions only exist if the trust is there. Trust and goodwill must be built, not squandered.
The Russians have told us multiple times why they attacked. No one is listening. No one is looking at it from their POV. No one hears their screams. And that is a dangerous thing because Russia is not to be trifled with or silenced.
It is the antithesis of peace and the very founding principles of the UN to completely ignore the security concerns of great powers. And people often bring up Ukraine and its concerns. Well, the Russian Ukrainians are Ukrainians too. And they have a right to self determination. Blind nationalism and cries of sovereignty will never excuse bringing fuking nazism back and trying to whitewash genocidal murderers. Having a coup and marginalizing your own people as you seek to build an ethnostate, revise history at an institutional level, and "derussify" Ukraine makes me question the importance of your security concerns when weighed against your nuclear powered neighbor who patiently is watching you transform into a threat.
That 3 of the 5 great powers that triumphed over nazis would then conspire to help them purely to bring Russia to her knees is not only morally wrong, but strategically inviting a catastrophic war.
Everyone keeps downplaying and ignoring the nazi angle when it is absolutely germaine to Russia's casus belli. It's why Russia will begrudgingly tolerate the Baltics and Finland and Sweden being in NATO, but not Ukraine. You need to understand the geographical context of Ukraine and the culture of Ukraine to see why this is happening. And you must also understand the culture of Russia and why they would react so violently to this brand of nationalism resurging. It explains everything, starting with the separatists' decisions all the way to Putin's and Lukashenko's actions.

There's even a channel dedicated to the running count of actual dead, captured, and remaining real-life neo-Nazis of Ukraine military and government. There's thousands of them. It's pretty wild.
One day when I have the time I need to research why it's so popular there. I know it was occupied by the SS in WWII but have no clue how it could remain, grow, and become part of government.
So no. The whole I'm rubber you're glue shtick doesn't work. There are literal Nazis in Ukraine, in theor government, and fighting on the battlefield against Russia right now. No matter how oddly you flex and find a weirdo or two in the ranks of Russia, Nazis control(ed) an area of Ukraine and a portion of Government there. Even if insignificant in the big picture, which I think it may be, Ukrainian Nazism was enough to steam the war by garnering the Russian peoples support to defeat their traditional foe. Each and everyone of the population has a relative dead from the Germans.

Ukraine has tried to reaffirm its "identity" via a systematic process of ethnic purification. They seek to erase the Russians who live there. The entire world is ignoring this. They are ignoring what caused the separatism and the war in Donbass. You can argue that it isn't most of Ukraine that has fallen under this influence. But it doesn't have to be. As long as they have people in their government working to this end and passing laws to this end, they are an existential danger to Russia. That we would arm and aid this group presents an even greater threat to Russia and a betrayal of the highest order.

"Hohols need to make it seem like things are progressing for at least the next 24 hours in order to get their next set of gibs. If there is one thing SMO taught me, they will do anything for gibs. I expect nonstop shilling and disinfo until the meeting is done. Also throwing in whatever reserves it takes. Its going to be ****ing retarded for at least 24-48 hours."
