Anyone buy livestock at auction?
Thinking of buying a pig at auction. I’ve never bought livestock at auction before.
If I buy the pig, can I have someone take it directly to the butcher to process? Or do I need to haul the pig there myself.
How much does it typically cost to process a pig?

Just buy one from the butcher. Unless you really know a lot about hogs and want to pick your own.
They are like art at auction. Some will go cheap and others will cost a fortune even though they all pretty much look the same to the untrained eye.

"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Cost is usually $150 upfront, then additional costs for specific cuts. Usually ends up $2-300 for total butchering.
Like stated previously, a lot simpler to just buy from butcher.

It depends on your local markets. You'll probably need to coordinate with a butcher before you buy the pig as they aren't going to be hanging out at an auction block.
You might be better off just finding a farmer that raises/butchers them and sells the meat ready to go.
The media is always on about the price of meat due to inflation but the simple truth is beef is extremely cheap right now if you buy at auction or direct.

Will also do ground beef + burger patties for you. The guys I've talked to average $3-4 a pound for high quality beef. Plus that includes the steaks and pricer cuts as well.Seems like a hassle

Look for a local farmer/rancher to buy from directly and get it sent to a local processor.

We do bulk buys of meat. Find a smaller meat packers (get out of the city if you have any farm or ranch country around you) and they will set you up with a rancher who has what you're looking for.
We've got a half of beef hanging right now I'm filling out a cut sheet for, should have it packed and in the freezer by mid-month.
If you don't know how to buy a live pig, I guarantee you don't have the facilities or equipment for care or transport it. Not worth getting that deep into the process.

You can take a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's ass, but wouldn't you rather take the butcher's word for it?

Have only ever bought chickens and ducks at auction but my family grew up going direct to the farmers in the countryside once every year for live hogs or cattle. We'd put a bullet in the head, string em up and break down the carcasses into quarters then brought it home to process further into steaks, roasts etc and bagged for freezer. If you don't have the knowledge or tools to process an animal, you're better off finding a butcher shop that offers that service. Just gotta go in and talk to them for rates -- independents are more likely to do it for you.
