What’s it like to work on a factory?

I’ve worked a few crappy jobs, but never in a factory setting, say like assembling together products like you would see in China(example).

It seems to me that working long hours in these jobs would kill a person mentally.

It’s pure misery, extremely claustrophobic and monotonous. You have to keep a certain pace, certain tasks are confusing. I wouldn’t recommend it.

It just got me thinking, there needs to be a major change in how we work and the type of work we choose to do. Like with these factory jobs, I think 2-3 hours a day is tolerable, but not a 9-5 thing. Working that much and that type of job lowers the quality of life, not improve it, imo, given that everything else like your house, car, and lifestyle is adjusted for a lower income, but nonetheless you’ll have all the basic necessities

It's great if you're Asian, I guess. Last couple manufacturing jobs I worked there were AZNs aplenty.

but yeah you get bored of it pretty quickly and want something that doesn't dumb down your cognition so quickly over time

Worked in a transformer factory for a summer about 25 years ago. It sucked. Bad. Plus you made just above minimum wage.

My first job was wrapping wire around a transformer coil, and it had to be wrapped exactly 508 times. No more, no less. So all I did literally all day was wrap wire and count. Eventually I was counting in my sleep. Got wrist, hand and back issues after two weeks.

No idea how people sat and did stuff all day for years.

I did a few when out of High School - and like anything else it's depends/varies greatly based on the particular job. The one I worked at for a few years was a book bindery, and the job itself wasn't really that bad overall.

I got fired for "insubordination" though.

The entire way we look at work needs to be changed, people need to get paid more and work hours need to be decreased. I’m not a commie or a democrat, I’m pretty Right-wing but the job system in the US is mostly wageslavery for a bulk of the population.

Ridiculous hours, miserable work, terrible pay. There needs to be serious reform.

its usually really boring repetitive work. mostly immigrants, white criminals and mentalcels.

worked a nightshift in one and liked it but i was forklift driver so just drove around all night moving stuff. some of the machine operators had it real easy just pretty much press some buttons on computer and machine does everything else. if it jams get maintenance. try and find unionized one.

also depends on the factory. are you building vehicles or pre fabricated walls or are you just watching thousands of bottles go by and picking out the defected ones or like amazon putting on stickers and onto a conveyor belt. one guy i used to know worked at a fish plant and just stood in the same spot on a conveyor and chopped off fish heads (lol srs).

Idk if a reform would work. This has to be a personal choice people make for themselves. Nice houses and cars demands more working hours and odd working conditions. Or one can work less and be content with basic neccisties but still have their soul intact.

When I worked at a gas station, I quit after two weeks because the hours went by terribly slow and I hated being ordered around by a chubby manager. Then I held another job that paid better, was a bit more lenient, but it was a dead end job. Hated the environment terribly.

I think if you can make $100/day working just a few hours, I think that’s best.

Worked in automotive factory for like a month when I was 18. Making hoses/brake lines etc. You had to switch machines every few hours so you don't get carpal tunnel or other repetitive hand injuries.

Chit sucked. Had to do like 70 parts an hour - basically putting an attachment or sleeve/tag on a hose and putting it in a machine, press button it does it's thing and then you remove it and start again. Over and over.

Was horrible. I can't do jobs like that. I don't mind labor jobs but I need to do skilled labor and something that's different each day.

No idea what it's like to work on a factory, I would imagine working in one would suck, but on one, i guess it depends on what you're doing, roofing?
Bodybuilding is a lifetime journey, anytime spent not bulking or cutting is a waste of time.

THat was my first job many years ago in HS.
We were buildilng computers, just a mother board, cpu, video card. That's all. We'd screw the case back on..and we did that for 8 hours a day.
I thought it was cool in the beginning then I realized Inside a building with no window, no coworker I could relate to. Really mindless, robotic and depressing.

Would not recommend bro, would rather suffer a bit and learn a new skill then doing this.

Thanks man, it’s def a lot of work, but it’s more like a hobby or vocation. Not really work. It can be exhausting at times but it doesn’t feel like work honestly. Not yet at least. Ask me in 10 years.

Years ago I worked at a Calvin Klein plant where the perfumes/colognes and lotions were bottled and packaged.

Work was mind-numbingly boring but had plenty of fun f*cking around with friends and coworkers

It was horrible for me. When I was a teenager I worked in a factory on an assembly line. 8 hours standing in one spot doing menial work. The time went extremely slow. My feet would be killing me after a few hours. Our duties on the line would change every few days so that made it a little better. The worst job on the line was folding boxes. You would assemble the box for a product, stick one of those clear round stickers on the bottom to seal it, then send it down the line so someone could put the product in. That was a pain too. You know when you buy something and take it out of the box, and think to yourself that you could never get it back in the box if you had to return it. Just standing in one spot placing the product in one specific way thousands of times.

yea it can be tolerable but who's going to hire some for 2 hours a day doing this?
There are people who will do that for a lifetime..more power to them but no thanks.

I left after 1 month and focused on school. Did not want to end up as a lifer in a warehouse.

True. But one could say that they’ll be more productive by working shorter hours though.

For example, if I worked as a dishwasher, I can tolerate 2 hours per day and be very productive within those two hours

My first job was welding on an assembly line. Horrible job but decent pay. Nothing worse than having stuff coming back from xray or powder with your cell marked on it.

However, most factories allow earbuds or a single side to be in. You can listen to audiobooks and get your education while you work, or at least a good engineering or business podcast. We didn't have pods back then lol. I would bring in a notebook and take down notes during my 15s and lunch.

There aren't many other jobs you can do that. Most low level jobs have too much interaction with other people.
