The universal healthcare debate for the US

Why are ppl in favor of this for the US? Some ppl were talking about it today and I’m just like…. I don’t get it

Every place they mention that has it implemented…. Canada, Australia, Norway etc…. All these places are like legit the size of a single state here in the US lmao

And it’s like some ppl act like there’s zero downsides to it. They just hear the word “free” and they’re automatically on board and all of a sudden you’re a terrible human being if you don’t support “free healthcare” because that means you are apparently cold hearted and give zero fks about people struggling or less fortunate than you

I mean, look at the VA for example. That’s a gov’t funded healthcare…. I can’t say I hear tons of praise for it. Actually I’ve heard the exact opposite

Plus we all know us taxpayers would have to pay for it.

I don’t wanna have to pay more money for random John Doe over here who’s 350 lbs and a daily smoker and suffers from diabetes and a plethora of other self-inflicted health issues who’s been rejected from insurance but now is afforded allllllll sorts of treatments and doctors visits thanks to “free healthcare” that’s nothing but more money taken out of my pocket and every other taxpayer

Like is there even incentive to be healthy anymore at that point?

The fact that some health issues normal people face put them into bankruptcy if they can't afford insurance is definitely a problem.
If we stopped being globalists and focused on our own tattered society, maybe we could improve something like the healthcare system.

Fuk Universal Healthcare

They should tax everyone over a certain weight and use that money to pay for the healthcare. Let fatties pay for other fatties

I think it's pretty selfish if somebody gets into an unfortunate car accident or if a kid gets cancer you wouldn't be okay with tax money being used to pay for that.

I don't think it's selfish at all to not wanna pay for Fat Joe's diabetes and smoking Joe's lung cancer. That makes perfect sense.

Maybe I don't want to pay for Fatty McFat's quadruple bypass? He ate his way there, I shouldn't have to pay more taxes for his lack of self respect and discipline.

America's population is over 340M if you count the illegals

National debt is over $30T

We spend more than our GDP

Foreign aid is about $51B anually

We won't even fix our own roads or bridges, and Susie McLibtard wants me to pay for her sex change surgery? No.

A badly implemented universal health care does not make universal healthcare bad, it makes doing it badly bad.
Let me put it another way, if a girl gives really bad BJs, that doesn't make you think BJs are intrinsically a bad thing, does it?

Surely The Greatest Country On Earth could do a good job of UHC, if it tried? Nah?

In the history of everywhere, nothing that’s been managed/ administered by government has been done correctly and universal healthcare would be no different

Do you really want to give the govnt even more control over your health after doing everything they can to force an expiremental medication into your blood stream? And threatening to ruin your life if you don't agree with the medical decisions they make for you?

Also, I am extremely curious why dems are not pushing for universal health insurance anymore. That has always been their golden road to socialism and expanded govnt (ie ObamaCare), now all of a sudden after a world wide pandemic, they just stop talking about it? There's obviously a self serving reason, I just have no idea what it is.

All of the countries with universal healthcare are finally seeing their health systems collapse.

They lasted a lot longer than I would've thought, and it allowed lots of people to use them as arguments about how successful they could be. That's not the case anymore.

Won't even consider it until leftists provide incentives/penalty system for people to stay healthy.

I don't consent to subsidizing a bunch of chain-smoking fatasses to clog the emergency rooms, no thanks. Those people should be forced to fix their bad habits or get kicked to the curb, no bullsh*t excuses.

Seeing how liberals only reward degenerates in this world (e.g. irresponsible deadbeats who don't pay their student loans), I don't see that happening anytime soon. In that case, it's a big fatNOfor me.

The govt has never had a program that was cost effective and well run. Everything is overpriced and inefficient. Healthcare would be no different.

If reimbursement was similar to Medicare for all, providers would need to at least double their volume to maintain current profitability. So either quality suffers or salaries are slashed— less people are then incentivized to go into medicine. Long waiting lists. Higher taxes. Govt deciding appropriate treatments. It could be a mess.

The US gov't already spends as much if not more on public healthcare compared to the rest of the world.

The US gov't is incompetent and should not be allowed any more control and more money because the mismangement.

Of the foreigners i know who's home country has universal health care, most complain about it. They don't like the wait times. They don't care for the service. It bothers then at the lack of variety of options made available to them. Not all are that way of course. Universal care in these countries appears to offer some services and coverage that are enjoyed. By and large from my experience talking with foreigners residing part of the year in Florida, they don't care much for their home countries health care system.

My parents are on Medicare, America's universal health care for those 65 and older. Most of America's medical spending comes from those 65 and older. My folks talk well of Medicare in general. Their big complaint is the wait times. It can take them 3 to 4 months to see a doctor that takes medicare patients. It is fairly common for me to visit my parents and find dad frustrated and looking at spending thousands of dollars on a concierge doctor. I believe the lower rates are $6000 per person per year for one of these personal doctors.

I'm personally not in love with our current medical system in America. We spend close to 20% of our GDP on health care, close to double what many other western countries pay. Our life span in America is often times lower compared to other western countries.

Due to 3rd party payment, our health care costs are to high I believe. I imagine eventually change will come to America. (then again our health care system creates a lot of high paying jobs for people that vote.)

Personally what I've done to lower my health care costs is to join a Christian Health Savings plan. It works similar to insurance. The main big difference between the two is that the Christian group wants members to shop around for lower health service pricing. As a result the money saved by price comparison between hospitals and between doctors is passed onto members. My healthcare costs are lower than what insurance charges.

The Christian group i belong to can be seen here ~

I feel like this is a perennial topic.

IMO in the US we have an awful system. It isn't a truly free market/capitalist system and it isn't a system totally orchestrated by the government.

We have a health insurance system which for most people is tied to their employment. The employee doesn't get to choose their health insurance provider and most times has limited options re: their choice of hospital or physician. Even *with* health insurance the patient/customer is captive and simply has to pay whatever is being charged without the option to shop around. Even *with* health insurance people can be pushed into BK by medical debt.

It sucks.

Re: not paying for fatties, smokers, drinkers, etc. you already pay for all of those types of people if they are covered by your health insurance company. The cost of their care effects your premiums.

I would be okay with an expanded Medicare system, perhaps with adjustments to payments based on locality/COL + also having a private system available.

Medicare is not free. There is a premium and deductibles/co-payments for Medicare.

On the private side I think that prices would be reduced some via competition and the only way I see real competition is if the patients have CHOICES- a choice of health insurance company/plan, and choices about doctors and hospitals.

I would prefer that healthcare insurance operate more like a straight indemnity a la auto insurance; meaning that you would pay a premium + deductible and the the health insurance would be there for expenses above your max out of pocket, ideally a maximum percentage of income.

No more fiddle faddling around about every appointment, prescription, procedure, etc. Either the insurance company is providing insurance or they are not providing insurance.

25% of US health spending is spent on administration - aka: paper pushers doing things like approvals, authorizations, billing, etc. We should be able to cut that by 15% at least by taking insurers out of the business of practicing medicine. They exist to indemnify against a loss. Period. The End.

It would be too hard to do, but only things like accidents and cancer should be covered. Being a fat ass is a life choice.

That's what will happen either way. Currently the big insurance companies and big pharma line government paedos' pockets to keep gouging legal. A universal option would eliminate the middle man and line their pockets directly with our money.

Thinking for themselves in not something people really are good at.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

I'm all for a two tier system and feel it's the most effective. People argue that poor people fall through the cracks, but the fact that people who can afford it will go private and pay for better service means there are more resources available for the public system - if it is supported properly.

For example, subsidize public doctors/nurses to make sure their pay is not an incentive to leave the public system. Make sure that there is mandated service within the public system before you can go private. Whatever it looks like, it needs to happen. And health care should not be something that you are afraid to access, in any country like it is in the US.

The irony here is in Canada people can pay for private medical agencies already and access health care way faster. We can also choose to go to the US and get any tests/procedures we want fairly easily, just pay out of pocket. So we basically have private health care anyway, people just don't realize it. Also, with online doctor options having a family doctor isn't even necessary as much anymore. I can go through Maple and have a doctor online in a matter of hours, which is faster than a walk in clinic and has no lines. They can even do referrals. So why people freak out about having a family doc when they can't even get in to see them within a month, I have no idea.

In NZ we have universal healthcare and private insurance providers if you choose.

I don't have private health insurance (just life insurance lol) but my wife does. It covers all her dr appointments, some perscriptions (most are fully/partially funded anyway), contact lenses etc.

You can go to a 'free' dr if you want to. I go to an accident/emergency type dr, where they are open later hours/on weekend etc, it costs me $40 and I can show up unannounced and be seen within an hour. The kids are free to see any dr.

With regards to hospitals, emergency dept is free for anyone any time, but wait times can be long, depending on how you present.

Our ambulances are not fully funded and are run by a charity. If you call one, it costs you $98 (private insurance will cover that depending on your plan).

My father has private insurance and recently had his prostate removed due to cancer. It was not urgent surgery and he opted to go private. From diagnosis to operation was 3 months.

The difference between public and private was the procedure - if he went public they would cut him open with a scapel and leave a big scar, longer recovery times etc. Privately, they went in laproscopically. Going private cost him $6,000.

One more thing - we have a universal insurance scheme called ACC (accident compensation corporation) so there are no lawsuits suing people/business for money or damages due to an accident. If you fall off a ladder at work ACC pays for everything relating to that injury for the rest of your life. If you trip and chip your tooth while out on the town - ACC. Break your arm sky diving - ACC. Even self harm is deemed an accident under the legislation.

Private insurance companies exist for one purpose only - to make a profit.
Damn

At the very least health insurance must get detached from jobs. So fuqing dumb to keep doing it this way, and makes American business less competitive.

I'm all for soda taxes, as it is at the heart of so much obesity and other ill health in the US. 5 or more cents an ounce.

It's a false argument really, you will find good and bad examples of countries with universal or private healthcare. Issue with the US is it has a badly run private healthcare system that really only has one purpose to make the healthcare and insurance industries wealthy. If US healthcare had prices for drugs and services equal to other countries it would be far more affordable and you'd probably have a far larger number of people with insurance and far less tax payer money funding healthcare programs like Medicaid and Medicare.

Was against the idea of universal healthcare but the US system sucks. Being tied to your job is a major downside and if your self employed or your job options suck then you are basically SOL. The obamacare ones are ****ty and overpriced. Favorite thing is when I switch jobs and I have to wait X amount of days before the insurance kicks.

Do I hate the idea of fat assses being paid for, yes but if someone I know gets cancer then health insurance shouldnt even be on their mind.
libs gonna lib

Let me put it another way, if a girl gives really bad BJs, that doesn't make you think BJs are intrinsically a bad thing, does it?

Surely The Greatest Country On Earth could do a good job of UHC, if it tried? Nah?
If its so superior, why do people get private insurance in the UK???
