Vladimir Putin's chief envoy on Ukraine told the Russian leader as the war began that he had struck a provisional deal with Kyiv that would satisfy Russia's demand that Ukraine stay out of NATO, but Putin rejected it and pressed ahead with his military campaign,according to three people close to the Russian leadership.


Besides...staying out of NATO is hardly relevant if the US is still arming you like you're a member. Being a de facto member of NATO is the problem, not de jure.

Yus, that's the problem with Russia and why their generals got nixed, their military is pretty anti-systemic. It's very top-heavy in relative terms, but organically and systematically, they need all of them because of the nature of their rigid command structure; it's not like when one dies he's simply a redundant spare. Upon death or capture the subordinates don't really know what to do, and it's not comparable to a Western army, where a death/capture implements an instant battlefield promotion of the most senior survivor and everyone carries onward.



Plus, they have no NCO's, poorly trained troops, bad morale, definitely the moral low road from the global perspective, and the Ukrainians are actually very good at killing them.


Thing is, Putin has so disproportionately invested in his military, it's basically poured into Special Ops. That might be good at keeping a close knit veil of protection around his own vested interests, but it's a woeful strategy for conventional warfare. Whilst I always thought the Spetsnaz were badass, this is just the antithesis of a wise investment for something like large-scale conflict.
