Bought FF7 Remake on PC

Originally played and beat the game on my PS4 Pro

Bought the game last week and playing it through again on my LG C1 OLED + 3080 at 4k 120hz HDR

Christ this game is so beautiful

The characters look amazing

Such a GOAT game and is seriously tempting me to get a PS5 just so I can play FF7 Rebirth when it releases instead of waiting for the eventual PC port.

Anyone who hasn't played the game yet, wtf you waiting for?

Jump from ps4 to ps5 version was crazy.

I enjoyed it but it most definitely has some issues that I really hope the new one fixes

Namely more fleshed out and open environments, and better side missions.

Also stop shoving Seph down our throats every 5 minutes, for fuks sake he's more scary and intimidating if you only tease him briefly.

Agreed 100%

Side missions were weak and I didnt like how they kept showing Sephiropth so early on

Hoping FF7 Rebirth has more of a huge world to actually explore like in the original FF7

Apparently one of the reasons its not coming to PS4 is because of the lack of SSD, meaning its likely to be much more open world as a hard drive won't be able to keep up

I still need to finish. Got to chapter 9 before my ssd fried, so I'm starting over. It gets pretty slow at times. I loathed the Aerith chapter, and did they saturate it with Sephiroth or what?

Yeah they were definitely held back by the PS4 limitations and probably budget as well. You could notice it with all those areas you have to squeeze/crawl through. The reason for those is to get the next areas to load. I'm hoping the new consoles give them the room they need to expand the environments.

Wall Market was a prime example. They could have made it into this rich, really fun area that encourages you to explore. What we ended up getting was just a bunch of tight cramped corridors.

Also I really hope they don't make the next game too convoluted and crazy. That ending of FF7 remake was a wtf.

Yeah they know sephiroth is a fave of fans so they overused him but overall that takes away from the story. After he's plastered all over the first game, I'm no longer intimidated by him.

Definitely the last chapters were the worst for me. When you go to the lab, the rest of the game gets pretty tedious. Sad because the earlier game was alot of fun.

I thought they should have made the game more mature since the fanbase is older. Instead they went with teenaged Japanese tropes like the girls are all into Cloud but he just doesn't notice. Thought it was really cheesy and stopped playing.

I'm old school on this but I prefer the old turned based rpgs I grew up playing

When I heard there was going to be a "remake" I nearly creamed myself because I thought it was going to be the original ff7 with updated graphics

I sadly came to realize I am not the target audience and will never get that remake I wanted

So much this. I am reading through this thread thinking I need to give the game another shot but I only lasted 10min as well.

Play it after you play the original. FF remake is also a sequel.

Nah, I totally yet where you're coming from. If you really despise anime acting then you won't enjoy this. In fact all newer FF games(the ones with voice acting) are corny besides FF12 Zodiac age which is surprisingly mature and contains a really well done political story involving warring kingdoms. Sadly, it was one of the least popular with fans due to not being corny like the rest lol.

For what it's worth, I don't think the anime acting is THAT over the top in FF7 R though. Barret easily annoyed me the most. Maybe try using subtitles?

FF12 was less popular because the dialog and story were too sparse. I played Zodiac age after not finishing the original and found it to be an excellent game though.

Tactics wasn't corny (same game designer as 12) and it was very popular.

No the story was completely fine, just different. It wasn't well received because it wasn't your typical final fantasy love story with fantasy elements and a typical bad guy who fuks with you all game. It just didn't fit the typical final fantasy mold that younger audience would understand. It was heavily focused on politics and nuance over actual character dynamics.

Honestly I had a fantastic time with it as I'm older and can appreciate the story. The combat in the Zodiac version was amazing as well. Probably my most polished FF experience to date.

FF12 had a top tier story and maybe my favorite aesthetic in the whole final fantasy series. It had the worst combat though. I didn't enjoy the gambit system at all. I'd set it up and then I didn't have to do anything else. FFVIII had the most edgelordy cringe characters imaginable but man was it fun to play

Did you play Zodiac though? I remember not liking the original FF12 combat that much but I definitely remember having to put more effort into the Zodiac combat. I think it's my favorite system in any FF game to be honest. You could get so creative with it but I never felt like the game could auto run, I definitely had to manually control my guy. In terms of overall lore and world building and aesthetic, FF12 Zodiac is the peak FF game for me.

Funny part is due to nostalgia, FF8 is my favorite of the series but I dislike its combat the most. The draw system was so tedious and clunky and required so much time to keep drawing chit DURING BATTLE.

I thought the same thing

The combat is fine, its still basically turn based somewhat

You still wait for your ATB bar to fill before you can cast/use abilities.

When you click to go to use an ability/spell the game time stops, aka turn based to a degree

Combat is actually really fun

The story was good. There just wasn't enough of it. The plot developments were way too sparse. That was the main complaint at the time.

The plot was largely based on Star Wars. And even the characters.

Ashe = Leia
Balthier = Han Solo
Fran = Chewbacca (an Playboy version)

Can't remember who the others were supposed to be since I haven't watched Star Wars in so long.

It's mostly the same story but they changed the ending, yes. They did it because they decided they don't want fans to know what could happen next, they want it to be a fresh experience. Imo that was a mistake because the story got hella convoluted and they are playing with alternate reality/dimensions BS that I absolutely DETEST in shows and games.

I wish it was faithful to the original story, just expanded to show off the world more, maybe introduce some cool new characters for side missions and add other activities to make the world feel more alive.

The new combat system, while not perfect, is very fun though and I'm glad they didn't go back to turn based. Turn based combat was designed in those days due to limitations in technology and the point of a remake is to have an old classic game playing like a modern one.

I disagree and felt like there was plenty of story. It just wasn't very understandable/relatable to as kid which was the majority of the FF fan base at the time.

I was there at the time on the forums. See my join date, same year it was released. The biggest complaint of the game on the forums was how adult themed it was and many fans wanted a simple and straightforward story. I definitely agreed at the time as I found it kinda boring when I played as a teen. After playing Zodiac a few years ago I was amazed at the story now that I could understand it better for what it is.

I think the lack of a romance hurt it. Because even Tactics had Delita and Ophelia or whatever. I remember thinking that 12 was missing the typical FF (or JRPG) romance when I was a kid.

But when you play 12 you basically go hours between any amount of dialog or cutscenes. Vaan barely says anything after the first few hours of the game and he is completely disconnected from Ashe and Basch (he rarely speaks to them ever), who are more so the main characters of the game.

Balthier calls himself the leading man but he has like 10 lines of dialog the entire game. lol.

Part of the reason for this is that Matsuno was taking too long when making the game. Square ended up firing him (officially he "quit") and finishing it as a rush job to get it out earlier.

Yes to both.

When you summon, Bahamut is controlled by AI and will attack the enemy. You can also spend some points you accumulate through your own combat to make your summon do special attacks.

Also, one thing to note is you cannot summon in regular fights. You only have the option during a boss fight.

Played it on OG PS1 when it was like 7 CDs. Quit when I had to breed and race the stupid chickens. Man that part ruined a pretty good game.
