Social media has done a lot of damage... But the late 80s were a time of horrible crime. Even with the recent spikes we aren't back to what it was like back then. It wasn't all a bed of roses back then.

The 80s and 90s were peak America but also very violent in urban areas. Less cameras/forensic evidence for crime, drugs were more underground so the drug trade was shadier/more dangerous, gangs at their peak, crack epidemic, mafia controlled NYC (which was an absolue chithole at the time, even worse than now).
But social interactions were more real and visceral. You had to get out to experience life, but everyone had a life. Even the nerds were fully socialized with other nerds. I don't think being an incel was even possible, unless that's what you wanted. And It was fun being a kid, but being an adult during those times must have been the epitome of 1st world freedom. Fuk society nowadays, srs.

Things were just normal in my reality until about 2012-2016 when social media and smart phones took over
I also remember back in the day obesity was rare and everyone talked to each other nowadays 90% of folks are looking at phones when you go out in public not wanting any conversation
Also you can't even go to most gas stations in 2022 since most have drug addicts constantly around them I mostly go to the travel centers

i have a sev at the corner of my block and i go there regularly for smokes/slurpees. i always see ppl - even the same people - chillin there talking to others. there is a young crew of 4-5 that i see there all the time always in the back smoking joints and drinking alcohol from backpacks (i shared beer with them b4) playing hacky sack or skatboarding or just goofin off.
