Laser Eye Surgery in 2022

Lasik/PRK bruhs, is laser eye surgery worth it or do you regret getting the procedure done? I've been thinking about pulling the trigger but there's always that one horror story. How much did you pay for it? How long has it been since you had it done? Can you see clearly?

Did that with hard contacts in 7th grade and still wear them at 33. You’ll get used to putting them in. As long as your hands are clean and you’re using solution and all that sh!t, you have nothing to worry about. You can use extra solution on the lens to make it more comfortable.

I’ve been on and off about laser surgery for the past decade and honestly think I’m fine with my contacts. Yea it would be great to wake up and go to bed with perfect 20-20 vision but it’s really not that hard to put them in so I’m just going the “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” route.

Been wearing contacts and glasses for 16 years now. Not really a big deal, just deal with it. Lasik creeps me out, do they still can opener your eyeball?

I seen they are now doing a surgery involving the lens that is superior to any kind of cornea surgery. IE for astigmatism, near sighted, etc they just swap the lens out with one that corrects your vision - should last much longer than lasik (which weakens the eyeball). I think it is called RLE.

I've never met anyone who said they regret getting LASIK. I've heard stories about some people whom it didn't work out so well for, but either 1) they had a chit doctor 2) they bought the cheap-ass LASIK you see in magazine ads and spam email or 3) they got the procedure back in the 90s when it was still relatively new.

I had it back in 2015 and my vision is still great; I get regular eye exams. My mom had it back in 2007 or so and she hasn't had any problems, either. I will say I also had a pretty strong prescription, which leads to them needing to cut deeper into the cornea to do the correction. One thing you need to understand isLASIK has been around for a long time and it has only made improvements since its inception. Many LASIK centers and surgeons are pretty strict about who they give the green light to as they don't want a bad reputation or lawsuits, so they will take every precaution to make sure you're a good candidate and your chances of complications are low.

I went to TLC Laser Centers and I paid like $5000 for the whole shebang. It was the premium deal where I get a lifetime guarantee and get free procedures if my vision needs correction again in the future. The same procedure without the guarantee is like $3000 or so. Totally worth it, without a doubt.

When you go in for the procedure they give you some meds to relax you and some ***** to put you to sleep so you'll sleep off the first dozen hours when your eyes need to heal. I woke up like 14 hours later and my vision was good. The right eye was a little fuzzy but it cleared up in a few extra days. The procedure only took like ~20 minutes total, srs.

Repped. 5000 doesn't sound too bad.

u w0t m8? How would someone regret getting 20/20 vision unless you run into major complications. Did it 15 years ago and me + every other person I've talked to who've had it done say it's the best decision they have ever made in their life.

Truth. I put it off for a few years because I was scared something bad was going to happen. I regret not getting it done sooner

Any regression in 15 years? How do you know when your eye prescription are stable enough to do it, is it 1 year with no change ?

Do NOT rush into lasik without consulting with some doctors and doing your homework first. some people have corneas that are too thin and aren't good candidates. also, lasik leaves a flap and if you need future revision surgery, you might end up doing prk anyways. lasik depletes the stroma more than PRK iirc.

I am not an expert, and most likely neither is the author in the article. Do NOT go to some cheap "lasik mill" place that does it for a few hundred

also, when i wore contacts i would wear daily disposables, and those were good, didn't have to worry about solution. They might be an option for some people, and you can get a deal on them at costco. i liked the oasys 1 day iirc

There are contact lenses that you wear at night and they temporarily reshape your eyeball so you see clearly during the day.

You mean the ones you have to put in with a little plunger? Im getting fitted for those after 20 years of wearing soft contacts because my eyes get dry now.

As far as lasik/prk goes, the risk is low. But the possible permanent side effects of glares/halos is devastating from what ive heard. I would suggest doing 1 eye at a time.

Had PRK done about 10 years ago. My sister had lasik at the same time and we got a bundle for 2.5k apiece. Haven't had any issues since, and can still see perfectly. Highly recommend.

My other sister had lasik done last year and she didn't have any issues either.

Yes.

I had lasik this year.

Downsides:
- I'm unable to look at any screen for an extended period of time, otherwise my vision becomes blurry. I regain my vision after not looking at any screen for about 30 minutes to an hour.
- I had farther range when I wore contacts / glasses. I went in for scheduled check-up following the operation and I could only see the big letters and the bich was like congrats you have 20/20!
- Eyes are randomly dry about 1 or 2 times a day.
- My eyes burned like hell after I woke up from my nap post-op.
- I can't see things up close anymore. Before lasik, for example, I could be eye to eye with my dog and see the details in the pupils as if I were under a microscope or something but after lasik anything closer than 5 to 6 inches my eyes can't adjust.

Upsides?
- No glasses. I actually liked wearing glasses to style with. Wearing non-prescription ones is odd to me, but, hey no more indents on my nose.
- No contacts. Was never really a problem but now I don't have to be strict in taking them off after a long day when I'd rather go right to bed.
- Lifetime guarantee from my provider. Ha.. ha.. this is tricky because each time lasik is done, a thin layer is removed from your eyeball. And you'll most likely never need to use this benefit. But it's nice to have.

Do I regret? Yes. Srs. People might brush off the negatives because the positives are good enough and the fact that you can't undo lasik. I suppose I am that one horror story ITT, but I am simply being as critical as possible. You are basically trading glasses/contacts for convenience (lasik or prk) with some risk and some $$$. Is it worth? If you ask me, no. I'd go back in time and stick with glasses and contacts.

None of what you said is true.

I had Lasik done 10 years ago. Almost zero regression. Right eyeball vision has gotten slightly worse but I have a lifetime warranty on my eyeballs.

The only thing you said that's remotely true is that if the cornea is to thin then they'll refuse to do the procedure.

The "flap" will heal on its own and doesn't require another surgery. If you have PRK done you'll see a dot in your vision for a while, that's the clear skin healing. At the center it forms a little piece of scar tissue which forms a dot in your vision which goes away in about a year.

I had PRK done which meant they cut a hole in your eyeball to do the surgery and that healed fine.

I had PRK done in 2014 for $3200, and I still have 20/15 vision. Best money I've ever spent in my life. Easily a procedure worth $20k+ to me.

I had LASIK done 13 years ago. Now, my vision to see up close is going out. I need reading glasses or contacts. I don't want to wear glasses or contact lenses again so I'm going to get LASIK again next year.

I came really close to getting the surgery as I had been wearing contact lenses for years with no problems but got tired of them. Then my doctor recommended the disposable kind and I’m happy with those so I’m not getting surgery on my eyes. I’d be devastated if something went wrong and no surgery is 100% safe.
I’m sure for my lifetime I’ll spend over $5000 but my eye insurance does cover a lot of the price.

This was about twenty years ago, but I had a great family doctor who decided to get LASIK. He was unhappy with the results, took off work for a couple of months, and then jumped off a bridge. Maybe the procedure is better now, but I certainly won’t be risking it. He was a good man and a good doctor.
At age 64, I've exceeded all my prior PRs. Not “over the hill” yet. :)

I did it in 2014 with a well known doctor who did Dwyane Wade, The Rock and other famous people. It was expensive but it was honestly the best decision I’ve ever made. To put it into perspective, I was -10 in each eye. Now 8 years later I still have 20/20 vision. The only thing I occasionally get is dry eyes but it was worth the trade off.

I got Lasik recently (Dec 2019). My procedure cost $1500. Mine was relatively cheap because they were running an end-of-the-year deal for 50% off (yeah seriously, I spoke to the front desk and they were way over prior year numbers and just did a deal for the last 2 weeks of the year).
My procedure was blade free and all laser. My eyes were dry AF **** the next few days and have steadily improved. I still use eye drops occasionally and it's usually when I wake up or there is a poor air system in a building.
Laser altered the eye and burned tissue. It smelled like burning flesh but not as strong (no cannibal here, RN that's worked in the OR and ER, not cooking skin myself).
My eyes were pretty fkin red for a day or two, seriously the first day or two were the only ones that were kind of hard. They held my eyes open with clamps (looked like those old-school things girls use to do their eyelashes). During they flushed my eyes with saline often so everything was blurry and I could see lights but nothing defined.
If your eyes get worse they have interventions they can do. Lasik and corrective eye surgery cant fix normal presbyopia though, it's something we all develop over time.

To answer your questions in order -
I think it was absolutely worth it and I don't regret it.
As stated above I paid $1500 for both eyes.
It'll be 3 years in December for me.
I see very well. My vision was 20/35 in my left eye and 20/45 in my right pre-op. After I have 20/13 left and 20/15 right.

OK, you are just like me, can't focus really close anymore I thought I was going fukin crazy. I get dirty and crap in my eyes often from auto stuff and it's super frustrating
