Planning on joining a local BJJ gym very soon (I'm a complete newb)

Advice I have gotten:

1) shower before going
2) keep nails clipped
3) tap often
4) don't go in acting like you know anything, just shut up and listen

Any other things I need to keep in mind?

wear a little cologne and make sure your butthole is shaved as well. No one wants to penetrate a hairy hole.

Don’t be scared to use all you’re strength. No one likes a fish.

But don’t make “fast tricky movements”. You don’t know what you’re doing.

Depending on gym setup things can go many different ways.

If you are lucky you will get to roll with experienced guys who will correct you on basics during the roll even pausing it and letting you know glaring errors or simple “hey you really have to do this”

This is just them letting you learn the moves so you can maybe play the game.

You might just get crushed by some blue belt working on his subs since all the brown and purples never let him. You may end up in a glorious chitshow that looks like a monkey fukking a football with a white belt.

The possibilities are endless!

But my recommendation would be

1) youtube and get down how to tie you’re belt.

2). Learn the concept of frames. Knees to elbows, hands and feet together forming a square with you’re forearms and shins.

You should be able to lay on your back connecting those and be able to go a whole match without someone passing your guard. You will need to learn how to reframe and hip escape etc.. but those are going to be your most important movements for a bit, how to twist and make room so you can move yourself and get your frames back.

There's a silent tradition in all BJJ gyms around the world where you volunteer to be the one sensei shows the technique on and you have to check his oil when the angus presents itself. If you don't do it, the boys are gonna run the gauntlet where you get choked out by everyone one by one.

Two guarantees: one, you will be ****ty at this, but so is everyone when they start. Two, you will get better if you put the time in, and so will everyone if they do. The basic moves are not hard to learn if you drill them and then practice them in rolls while focusing on technique. You will have to put the time in. It is amazing exercise, you will lose a lot of fat while gaining muscle if you eat right.

Leave your ego at the door

don't try and " win " you are there to learn not to win. Competitions are for competing, your gym is for learning

Brush your teeth before you go
no one likes to roll with someone that has dragon breath

I recommend not to eat anything at least 4 hours before you train, no one likes to hear trumpets going off in the distance when rolling

if you make it fun it will be fun , don't think of it as a chore

Don't be that guy that hurts people, hurting too many people will only result in your coach smashing you and you will end up not having anyone to train with

Unless you're dirty I don't recommend showering before class. You'll wash away the good bacteria and open yourself up to infections.

Had a newb spaz on me and almost caught a upkick to the chin. Same guy who spazzed was missing for a few weeks after only 3 wks. Shows up 2 wks later having to withdraw and cancel due to a torn rotator cuff he got while rolling one day.

Not everyone is going to be jacked. Some will look like they have no cardio but they will have cardio for days.

Yeah I understand that.

But if you took a poop anytime during the day. And only wiped with TP. Plz shower, or at Least don’t go north south.

If you’re mats are clean and everyone clean it’s better than everyone trying to harness the power of their good bacteria. Srs.

Yep, people get hurt by spastic newbies. Usually the newbies hurt other newbies before hurting themselves or getting continually smashed by more experienced grapplers

It's better for everyone to be calm and in control of your movements. Also controlling your breathing will help you

Hey, I'm sorry to say this, but I believe that this is terrible advice for someone new. One of the main goals of starting out for most grapplers is to remain calm and not let new positions freak you out. New grapplers hurt themselves and other people when they go balls to the wall 100% intensity.
Plus they won't be learning anything if they go hard. If you go 100% intensity straight away then the focus in your mind will be on "LMAO give it your all ph4ggot" instead of what you should be focusing on (e.g remembering instructions, practicing technique, muscle movements, etc).
In addition, the fatigue build up from 100% intensity will prevent trainees from practicing jiu jitsu well in the future. It's the same idea with weight lifting (overload and rest). If you go 100% intensity for lifting all of the time you just won't be able to recover from fatigue and progression will be impossible (since you are 'maxing out' every time you train essentially).
Yeah, nobody likes a fish for training. But most every grappler would prefer training and learning with a fish than some newbie going 100% on everything every drill and every roll and not thinking at all.
The better option would be to aim for 70-80% intensity when you train and save 100% for actual competition/rare occasions.

You either purposefully left out my next sentence or don’t understand what the two together mean.

“But don’t make “fast tricky movements”. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

That’s like a 10-20% “intensity”. Nothing fast. But if he learns closed guard and has someone in it. He needs to use all his strength to keep his legs closed. If someone’s trying to pry an arm away from guarding his neck. He needs to use 100%

You are advocating for much more extreme “intensity”

I am arguing for much less but with full utilization of strength so a blue belt trying to work on his arm bars doesn’t get pissed off he’s rolling with a limp fish. And he needs to learn how to match and stop other peoples will.

Thats cool. Usually kids lessons for boxing/MT/MMA don't until 7.

My daughter is 5 and has been training BJJ for just over a year now. Got her first tournament in December & the coaches are all confident shes going to clean up as shes unusually good for a child that age. Her positional control is awesome & shes already plays a really good armbar from guard. Its dope to see her picking it all up so quickly.

Still horrible advice.

Newbs don’t know how to not make spaz movements, especially if you are telling them to not be afraid to use all their strength. Worst injuries I’ve ever had are from newbs trying too hard. So many inadvertent knees / elbows / feet / etc.

- lose all ego. You will get smashed and feel lost. Maybe for a long time. Embrace the suck and remember you are there to LEARN AND IMPROVE.

- tap early and often.

- breathe

- don’t try to “win” rolls. They are your training partners, not training opponents.

- focus on your breathing, and not just going force on force with grips / frames.

- ask questions, especially when you get tapped.

- breathe

- focus on fundamentals, especially as a white and blue belt. Learn proper defense and escapes.

- technique over strength, timing over speed, correct fundamental movement over intensity.

- breathe

- breathe
I don’t get it I don’t think I’m being understood but whatever.

I literally told him to work on just frames and small adjustments

Not to spaz out. But added in one small line about not being scared to use strength and that’s all anyone can focus on.

You are talking about taking elbows, knees, feet. But all is that is from fast movements not strength. Which was my focus on not doing and differentiating.

But you guys keep thinking I’m saying what I’m not.

You can’t just castrate someone and have them lay there and be a fish or flow roll. They need to roll, and showing them the difference between being a fast spaz flailing and getting grips and fighting to hold frames, with real strength behind it. Is the safest most productive way to get him used to rolling and safely applying himself physically with real effort.
