I prefer video games to TV, feel like its more stimulating. But not gonna skip the gym or pass on hanging out with friends because of a game.
In high school it was fun, brb come home after football/wrestling/track practice at like 6 or 7 and just talk chit with friends on the team about COD/WoW

Once you become a grown adult and set in life youre really just dying, so live out life the way you want.

i just dont see how if you have 2 30 year olds who pay their bills, if one chooses to go work out, hike, spend time with friends outdoors, etc... is more "useful" than someone who has a blast playing WoW all weekend BSing socially with friends on there and discord, and watching movies/shows while slamming peanut butter sammies and cold cuts

its all the same really as long as you are happy
Useful as learning a new skill or earning some extra money.

Rather than play power washing simulator you could invest $200 in a power washer and with that small investment go earn $100/hr in your spare time.

Depends on personality.

People that are hyper-competitive should not play multi-player video games.

These types of people can win 90% of games, then the next day ruminate on the 10% they lost 24/7.

While at work, showering, driving, etc. Just playing the scenario in their head on what went wrong and what they could've done better etc.

Ask me how I know.

On the flip side, as some miscers have posted, most just play during their free time and it doesn't affect their personal lives.

One of the best feels I remember srs as phuck. Brb come home after Taekwondo session and feel kinda sore in my body and also feel the fresh winter snowstorm in my face and go home drink some warm coffee and play some games with friends. This makes me wanna go pick up some sport again.

The hyper-competitive types are always quick to get toxic about video games in my experience. Like they no joke don't seem to enjoy playing video games unless they can be beating someone at them, and they will cheat or manipulate their way to victory if they have to.

Yeah, but only because that console sucked, you were much better off selling it than getting sucked into the bullchit they were pushing at Sony.

highly dependent on WHAT games you play imo. Multiplayer games can get way too addicting and for most people, they stay at an average level of skill while pouring thousands and thousands of hours into it. I'm not even sure it's 'fun' anymore. You're just addicted to the dopamine surges from winning. I definitely wished I never played thousands of hours of MOBAs/MMOs.

Playing a nice single player game, story, works your brain, challenges you is nice. And you'll play like what, 2/3 hours every day for two weeks max? Probably better than watching TV/YouTube. Online gaming....you can just do 5 hours every day for years. FML what an absolutely stupid time sink. I'm gonna regret it till the day I die.

so the point of life is just to acquire skills and money? sounds completely boring and like a waste of life in the end. Not to mention you should have already spent most of your first 20-30 years of life doing that, why continue on for the rest of your life unless you didnt do enough during those years to let you live a completely adequate life filled with enough skills already learned to enjoy the REST of your life not having to continue learning and saving.

At some point the learning and saving needs to slow down/stop and the enjoying life has to begin bruh. Guarantee you are going to wake up feeling old AF one day and realizing you cant go back in time and enjoy things you missed out on, and there will literally be nothing you can do about it. **** that feeling.

Ill still pick doing things I enjoy doing and whatever is required to meet those needs. In my spare time ill just do what I enjoy because in the end thats all that matters, there is no reward or bonus for how much money/skills you have at the end of life.

Right and you can either miss out on memories because you were busy making money, or because you were busy playing video games (as a grown man, mind you).

So which of those two activities are actually becoming of men?

Also you can enjoy life being with friends and family, or enjoy life playing video games.

Again which of those behaviors is becoming of a grown man?

Not hard to answer that one...

the most notable characteristic becoming of a man is him doing as he pleases without regards to other's judgements of his actions.

Also if the options are to spend X amount of years wasted making money(likely doing something not ideal with ones time only doing it in exchange for money) vs playing video games, which is enjoyable and releases tons of dopamine and positive neurotransmitters, ill pick the latter.

Because once again 1) IDGAF what anyone else thinks, and 2) when im dead the thing i will regret most is not enjoying the time I did have to the fullest the way I wanted, not how others wanted me to live, because they wont be going to the darkness with me.

If you want my honest opinion here:

I spent 8 years of my life bodybuilding, which by many is considered manly especially doing it halfway decent like I have and in a respectable way, and comparing that to 8 years i spent playing Everquest and WoW, I was FAR more happy playing video games than bodybuilding to be completely honest.

I can't say ill go back to video gaming because its not the same experience I had when those games were THE games and I was at the level of skill I was back then. But honestly I had some of the best times of my life doing that, and I have done some pretty exciting chit and chased countless beautiful women at or above 8/10 misc standards.

video games can be addictive, but assuming you are a responsible adult who takes care of business there is nothing wrong with playing video games when time allows it.

Lost 2.5 years of my life to Star Wars Galaxies back when I was 19-21. It was literally all I did for that time, game from sunrise to sunrise

Won't even let myself near online gaming anymore because I know where it'll go, and it won't be good places. Single player gaming is enough, much easier to limit to just actual down time.

And what if a guy likes to kill people as a hobby, does that not matter either?

No guy is a man just because he does what he wants without regard to others.

There is responsibility that goes with being a man and that doesn't mean beating the level three boss.

Whether you'd like to admit or not, or can see it or not, the opinions of others absolutely do matter.

You've went as far as aggressively modifying your body and that was because nobody's opinions matter?

You also described growing out of video games, which most respectable men eventually do.

You can learn many things from a video game. Plenty of learning apps are setup like games for kids and even adults. You can learn hand-eye coordination, teamwork, gaming tactics, and leadership in gaming. Obviously you can also rot away all day talking **** to your boys in COD or something, but even still you're having fun and playing with your friends.

If you rot away that's a YOU problem, not a gaming problem. Learn to control yourself enough to evaluate if you have time to play or what you're sacrificing. Gaming is fine, it's certainly no worse than just mindlessly binge watching some show, at least there is some physical engagement.

It's a leisure activity for the 99.99% of people who aren't making a living off it and so it shouldn't be something you have to analyze too much. If you are not achieving key things in your life because you're spending time gaming, then it's a problem. If you are physically or mentally becoming unwell because of gaming too often, it's a problem. Other than that you can simply do what you want with your own free time and evaluate the pros and cons of spending time doing w/e it is you're doing. Anytime you spend time doing something, that's time you could have spent doing something else, so just make sure you're doing what you care about and who gives a **** what someone else thinks ultimately.

If you want to play wow classic or w/e, buy the game, play it, and stop when you have something to do. The thing about being an adult is that you can do what you want, but you have to have the will power, knowledge, and intuition to know when enough is enough.

If you have a real gaming addiction then go talk to someone about it, but it's most likely just nostalgia causing you to overly romanticize an enjoyable and simpler period of your life.

okay first off major bull**** argument there with killing a person

playing video games is neutral to society and other people, it is of no benefit to anyone and no harm to anyone, killing people is a direct harm to society so comparing the two was just inflamatory or ignorant

if someone is earning money that is still self serving so i dont see how its any different than choosing to play video games, other than doing what society tell you a "man" is supposed to do/be.

I also never said I grew out of video games, I said they changed from what they were when I stopped playing them so I could invest fully in bodybuilding. I didnt "grow" out of them I decided to give other things in life a try to see if I was missing out.

Playing WOTLK Classic on a fresh start right now OP.

Took off work the first day pre-patch dropped, took a day off for when WOTLK patch launches (tomorrow). Doing the same thing for CoD: MW2 launch as well probably.

I'm a 70 DK working on my professions atm.

I work from home, make good money, am casually dating a girl, hitting up the gym daily, etc. It's something to do for fun when all else is not happening. I do think I should make more trips to the beach/pool though, maybe take Tennis lessons.

I went for gym for 4 years in a row and then stopped, then started to play videogames for 4 years and let me say this. I was way way much happier when i went to the gym than when i played videogames (online games for hours every day). I felt like I didn't have anything in my life, after gaming session i was kinda numb and felt like a robot also while gaming i got pissed so many times that I raged all the time.

I've mentioned this several times, the problem with video games is that they act as an achievement substitute.

Men are hard-wired to want to achieve chit and feel competent. Wewantto grind. Video games offer a super low-hanging fruit designed to be as addictive of a grind as possible. IRL grinds aren't nearly as rewarding or enjoyable, at least not in the short run.

I've been playing or practicing golf probably 4x a week for 2 years. I still fukking suck. I shot a 104 yesterday; if golf had video game style comp ranks, that would be bronze or silver tier. I've been hardstuck there for about a year, and I lack the athletic ability to ever move beyond gold or plat. Just don't swing fast enough. How long would you keep playing a video games where you were hardstuck at silver for years.

Or if you look at my job... I'm a nano-scale hardware engineer. It took afewyears in school to figure out what was going on there. Going from algebra 2 in 9th grade to advanced VLSI design techniques in grad school was a straight-up fukking 10 year grind to making six figs. And 80 or 90 percent of it was scaffolding. It was just solving ghey math problems with absolutely no practical use. BRB "find the integral of sin(x)*cos(x)". The practical applications and the money didn't even start coming till like year 9 of that grind. How many of y'all would grind a video game for 9 years to unlock the endgame.

Video games give you measurable progress in couple-hour bursts that keep you logging in every day to unlock an Elden Sword or some bullchit. And you're totally engrossed when you're in that grind, and you feel like the fukking man when you complete that grind... and guess what. It was basically for nothing. That achievement goes away as soon as your PC turns off.

It becomes VERY EASY to ignore IRL, where a lot of men get "hardstuck" with lives that aren't going anywhere. and just immerse yourself in video games where you can progress every day and be the man. IRL grinds are much slower, more frustrating, and sometimes you take one step back before you take two steps forward. But they're REAL. You BENEFIT at the end of a worthy grind. Video games are purpose-built to make progressing as addictive as possible, and leave you with nothing when you're done with them.

Fukk, have you guys heard of the "engagement-optimized match making" that EA uses for Apex Legends? They don't try to match you up in fair games, they try to match you up in a "lose-lose-win" pattern of games where you have to struggle before breaking through and succeeding. They're abusing your psychology for no other reason than to keep you playing Apex for longer. Video games are literally digital drugs for the male ego.

BRB "it's all about moderation and balance!" It's the same thing with other drugs like alcohol and weed. There's no of Zen-like balance in taking those drugs. They're clearly vices, and they're a slippery slope that you have to watch yourself on lest you slide down it. I see Madden and Battlefield the same why I see a fifth of Jameson. You want to watch your consumption of it, and you probably want to keep it away from children.
