personal / individual goals

good evening, boyos




i've spent some of this weekend considering my life, things i've accomplished, and what i'd still like to pursue / work towards and accomplish





i've realized i haven't given this much thought outside of work and vague high level stuff (i.e. - start a family, buy a house, make x amount of dollars, etc.)







anyone have anything they're working towards? writing a book? learning guitar? running a marathon? (ded fkn Srs)
~focus on what you can control crew~

Currently working on writing a novel. 50k words in. About halfway done.

I do it everyday and made it a habit. Like working out.

I am reading every day after not doing so for so long. Felt like my brain was rotting fast and it’s now slowly recovering.

I am also trying to learn a new language (already a polygot brah so I’m not complaining), but I’ve been slacking a bit because of RL stuff and I don’t have much time.

I’ve also been moneymaxxing with some side hustles but I want more

Also started lifting again after a shoulder injury, depressing to start from zero but it’s okay. My cardio is dogchit too

You probably do, it’s likely being hidden by inhibitions.

When I first started writing I was embarrassed and when I told my wife this is something I want to do seriously, it felt like I was coming out as gay or admitting some weird secret.

Like just the idea of wanting to sit at my desk and make up stories felt cringe like something I shouldn’t be doing. The first short story I wrote got personalized feedback from an extremely prestigious and choosy literary magazine. I printed out that feedback and have it on a cork board near my desk.

TLDR just fukin do it bro

I have a masters in political science. I’m also an avid reader, it’s my primary source of entertainment. That’s the extent of my education.

Dialogue has been the hardest thing for me to get down well (how do you write a Boston accent without sounding ridiculous? That sort of thing) so that’s what I’m studying on my own.

It’s honestly been the most intellectually stimulating / challenging endeavor I’ve ever attempted. Studying Arabic and becoming semi fluent a close second.

I pretty much began after reading a trash book and thought, I can do this. Armed with a bottle of scotch I was on my way.

Advice for learning a language? I know a bit of French from school, but have been on and off trying to learn Swedish. Swedish is brutal tbh. Any tips for me to really get into it? I've been slacking hard and forgot most of it already haha.

OP, I'm in a similar boat. My two main focuses right now have been career and house. In a solid financial position but need to make more money and the past two years stunted my ability to buy a house. Obviously I want to find a wife and have kids as well, eventually have my own homestead.

I'm in the same boat otherwise though. I'm starting to read more again and will before bed every night, but also always wanted to learn Swedish in full and learn to play the piano. The hard part is seemingly time management of these things along with life. Quite a few other things I'd want to do to.

i want to finish gaining as much muscle as I can by 35(1 year) and then my REAL goal is getting back down to 220lbs and sustaining it and getting into long distance sports so I can stay healthy and lighter weight and enjoy tons of carbs.

Dead serious.

I would start the main goal now but my body is going through its most massive growth spurt ever right now so im running with it, and always have had my growth cut off point at 35 to not risk dying young.

my goals are simple, continue to be successful at work, get my mortgage paid off, gain more muscle.

every day i make small steps towards all of that

What works for me is, once you learn the basics (and that alone will take months if not a whole year, depending how consistent you are), just start to watch videos, news, read forums/books, movies with subs etc. in that language. You need to get your brain accustomed to that new language (living in a country where that language is spoken would be even better, but obviously not everyone can do it).

Also, I think genetics plays a role in a way too. I feel like I’m gifted in that field, (but I’m horrible at math for example).

And lastly, english is very easy, so you start with a bit of a disadvantage by having it as your native language

Yea makes sense. People have told me to watch tv in the language to pick things up as well. I need more time on the basics though and plus Swedish is just hard to pronunciate.

I think consistency is what I need too. I definitely don't have genetics to pick language up quickly, but I did get French fairly easily without putting much effort into it. I may have hope after all.
