Super important question for athletes/former athletes

played basketball regularly from 12 to 19-20, seriously got into lifting right when i stopped basketball, did that for about 7 years, weight went from 220ish to currently around 260. was doing cardio during that whole time but never super explosive stuff (jogging and 70-80% sprints max)

Now during all my years of basketball i was doing suicides and running very hard during games/practice obviously, never got injured.

Recently i joined a amateur football team and literally first practice i strain my right hamstring. 3 weeks out. thought it was because insufficient warmup. been seeing a guy for rehab, still seeing him.

returned last friday, hamstring feels a bit sensitive but nothing crazy. practice yesterday, i injure the left hamstring this time, exact same way as the first time, during the end of a 100% sprint.

Now the left one was supposed to be healthy, and this happens still, and im starting to wonder if lifting weights during all those years without doing any explosive movements may have seriously ****ed with my mobility and made my muscles (especially legs) stiff as **** and super injury prone. worth noting is that i've never been mobile to be begin with.

i've also never injured myself in the gym, but again sprinting is completely different, and i was 40lbs lighter last time i did this type of movement. Obviously many guys who sprint are way bigger than i am, but they still do their explosive movements during the period they're gaining mass.

any experience/knowledge some of you guys have with this, playing sports in high school/college or elsewhere?

IMO no.

Lifting weights over the years may have helped in not completely tearing your hammy

accidents happen, just warm up properly esp as you get older

Shouldve conditioned better bro. Your body wasn't ready, I would've thought 4 weeks of conditioning and working at 100% sprints for a while before going at it. Good luck I've pulled hammies before and it sucks

conditioned as in worked my way back up to sprinting progressively? because i did that, which is why the second injury was so much of a mindfuk to me, at the end of rehab i started doing light jogs, then few days later a bit faster etc. etc. and everything felt fine which is why i couldnt believe it when i strained the other one the exact same way as the first.

i'm aware of that but fuk im 28 not 38 and i workout regularly + cardio get good sleep good diet etc. pulling hamstrings everytime i do a few sprints seems a bit extreme for someone with my profile who's basically never been inactive since childhood

if you're not used to sprinting, it's probably going to put a lot of load/stress on your hamstrings. it was your first tryout like you said. if you're going hard on sprints for the first time after not doing them for awhile, expect chit to happen bc your body is not used to it. hamstring injuries are the most common injuries among sprinters as it is.

you're probably over-striding beyond what your hamstrings can handle currently.

things like doing dumbbell RDLs with "full" ROM, back extension, single-leg hamstring work will help. or even more dynamic hamstring movements (you can look these up) and eccentric work.

Welcome to getting old.

Appropriate warm ups for appropriate activities are key. Need to have the warmup peak at the same intensity you are going to be going at and really work up a sweat. Srs. Also don’t just go from cold to hot. Start out slow even in a game, think and watch and let yourself get hot before you turn on the jets.

We might be stronger but we’re less elastic and rubbery than we used to be.

so you gained mass, loss flexibility/mobility and basically stopped all cardio and explosive movements for 8 years and then went 100% on a football field?

Jesus fuking christ what were you expecting. Of course u tore some chit up. You were pushing your body way past its performance limits. You gotta work your way up incrementally and realize that having more mass means more more force on your tendons, muscles, joints. The last time you sprinted you were 40 lbs lighter. You doofus.

i did a lot of RDL-type movements during my years in the gym but yea there definitely are different type of movements i might need to incorporate. like i said i was also sprinting during all those "off" years but it definitely wasnt 100% more like 75-85%

warmups were fine especially before the 2nd strain, i was super cautious and really careful because i suspected it played a part in my first injury. guess it wasnt enough..

didnt stop all cardio movements, just wasnt sprinting 100%, still running and pushing it up to 80ish% and felt great but yea clearly not enough to prepare for the chit i did in football practice.

Sounds like you trained for a marathon as opposed to a sprint........
