I thought i read that he had actually gained all that weight but maybe I got it wrong. It’s a decent enough film. Based on a true story.

Saw it with my gf in theaters. We both liked it, and I love what it's about.

Watched with Wife, kinda slow for my taste but a manly tear was shed. Wife's eyes were leaking like crazy.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

I thought it was okay but rather sad.

I also didn't like the religious message that god is going to destroy your health to make you so religious you become a priest.

That is rather bizarre and like the logic of a crazy person.

To your question, it was makeup that was pretty good. You could tell because his whole face wasn't affected.

I didn't get that vibe at all.

If God wanted a good soldier on the ground, who better than a buff ex boxer who can talk to the disenfranchised?

It's like he struck down one of his own best soldiers IMO.

It's literally said in the movie that he thinks god keeps challenging him to be more religious. That's why he's crawling around and whatnot.

He's like, if I have to crawl to church I will because that way god will be happy I crawled there.

Meanwhile, god is not at church and being a priest accomplishes little of what Jesus said to do with your life in Matthew. Jesus actually said to stay OUT of church.

So, the movie was really about a f@cking crazy dude who was very mixed up.

I like Mark Walberg but he frequently plays crazy idiots and does it really well. He character will come up with some lame plan and then think he's going to succeed massively, only to get destroyed in a dark comical way.

He did a little of that in the scene where the Mexican girl finally decided to have sex with him and she's in love, then he rejects because "I'm gonna be a priest!!!". That reminded me of his Boogie Night and No Pain No Gain character.

If the movie wasn't about a real person I would have thought it another one of his odd comedies.
