Good money for central valley California. Definitely not good money for bay area where typical 1bd apartments go for $3k+/mo and 3/2 starter homes are near $1m. I know of too many guys who make near top end of that range in milpitas and san jose and still have to live with roommates. Of course you can find cheaper housing and commute but now you're adding additional 1hr commute each way, bridge tolls and wear/tear on vehicle. It's soul sucking.

I have to admit, the way some of these companies have been able to turn themselves into a kind of cult is fascinating. Google, Apple etc..

How they have managed to make employees feel like they are part of something big and important when really they are just widgets.

Having pods so they can sleep overnight, leaving offices open on weekends. The way they clap and cheer their CEO like some dear leader (Steve Jobs). These are supposedly intelligent people who are being used and loving it.

Would love to hear from people who have worked at these places.

How much overtime do you think they put in. If you work it out at an hourly rate it usually doesn't work out to be much.

This is just base salary -- for many engineers that's less than half of their total comp.

Like others said, I expected much more. They probably move on and manage other engineers or something through a number of corporate titles, product ownership, leading initiatives/projects, etc. Salary likely increases based on that stuff, if not directly, then through options and whatnot.

You can't afford a house in any city that has tech jobs. The engineers I know back in Texas are living in 1-beds in Austin and Dallas. Salaries out there are $80k-$100k on the lower rungs, and houses are $500k + 2% property tax.

It's just as unaffordable as California, frankly. In either one, you are not owning a home without two professional salaries or a gift from your parents. And don't get me started on Idaho.

I think that amount of compensation is exclusively for VP / executive level. You have to be managing people. The compensation includes salary, stock (vests every 3 months in some cases), options (often worthless due to strike price, but sometimes you'll get lucky) and bonus that pays out 1-3x a year.

When you get to that level you are rolling in it, but the creativity is shut off and you are dealing with admin BS which is what a lot of talented software engineers hate about it. However, it's golden handcuffs. The dream is to go from one start up that either goes public or get sold, then to another then the next. (This allows hands on creativity and very little dealings with HR bs, then a big windfall in the end). It can happen more than once - I've seen it.

Wrt management compensation, it's not as high as you might think, at least on the front lines.

I basically work at a union shop with really strict pay bands. Judging off those, my old manager with 20+ years exp and a bunch of patents was making $250k base + $80k/yr stock. Filing taxes as a single dude, he was pocketing about $160k base.

My new manager's a guy with 15-ish years experience, and he is getting about $200k base and $60k/yr stock. He's married, so he walks away with about $145k base.

The stock was the fun part when it tripled over a decade during the Fed bull, but the base isn't going to blow anyone away. ETA: the annual bonuses aren't anything wild either, and annual raises are standard 2% corporate America bullchit.
