First hip hop album to reach #1 was back in 1987 - Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill.

Beastie boys was a much bigger achievement imo, Vanilla Ice makes pop hop

Ironically, Suge Knight met him with his goons on a balcony outside of a party and threatened to throw him off the ledge unless he signed over a good chunk of the rights to royalties from the song to them. And no, neither Suge nor any of his cronies had any involvement in the making/production of the song, they were just flat out robbing him. True story.

Sadly Rapper's Delight didn't do much on the hot 100-just made the top 40. Over here it got to number 3 & was huge in Europe-they even shot a video for TopPop with the Dutch girl dancers. Rapture is great until she starts rapping & gets good again for the last bit.

personally think them coming out in the late 80s/early early 90s were pivotal to the golden age of hip hop. 1991-1999 gave us so many legit bangers. would they have happened without vanilla ice or mc hammer? they were the precursors to puffy...but would wyclef, big pun, nore get there without these two clowns?

something to think about. not in a good or bad way either. just to marinate.
