I completely agree with the fact that you should buy what you can afford. But the term "afford" is different for everyone.

What I dont agree with is that a diamond wedding ring is not an investment. To me its a sunk cost. I dont plan on reselling it in my lifetime.

With lab grown flawless precious gemstones costing a fraction of dug up stones any one spending 3 months salary on an engagement ring is a joke

There is devil in the detail however here. A lot of the namebrand places..... you are paying for the label and their marketing. Some of the upcharge goes into them picking a quality diamond for you. The diamond world is a pretty small world. I still went for value to some extent but I made sure it was a GIA graded diamond and in the range of measures I was looking for. The most variables being the cut and like most things, I got maniacal on those metrics to ensure I found the round diamond with the perfect cut to refract light the most balanced and best way possible. Its all about angles on the cuts and lengths of the sides etc.

I would say a place like tiffany is for someone that has a lot of money and not a lot of time. Its not for suckers (unless you are broke and buying there then yes you are a sucker) but its for someone who does not care to pay say 30% more for someone else to do the work for them. Back ten years ago, my guess would be the $35k ring i bought directly from a Jewler in New York would be around $50k at tiffany.

For me, i made the time, because I wanted my decision to be well thought out by me.....on top of the fact that I still love value for my money....

I’d say the mall tends to be a terrible place to buy, but it can be more affordable.

There is a custom jeweler in our area that does all of the work themselves. They cut the gems, mold the rings and settings, and create very unique and custom designs. Although you’re going to pay higher prices, it’s not because they “overcharge”, it’s because they make the highest quality pieces you can find, are custom, so that increases value, and they gaurantee their work. You can take anything back to them, even antique pieces, and they have the ability to fix/change anything in house, which cuts out the middle man, which means, you are actually getting MORE for your money. The places you find in the mall only have lower prices because you’re generally getting cheap jewelry.

I disagree. I think a smaller classic diamond that is great quality doesn't look cheap. I had a simple 1/2 carat solitaire that was perfect for my small hands. It didn't look cheap at all.

Totally hear you - but I don’t consider Tiffany a “mall place” despite the fact that it’s a large retailer and can be found in malls

1. Consider the divorce rates these days. 50%+ is an understatement.

2. Consider the fact that women initiate 85%+ of divorces (80% in general, 90% for "college educated" women).

3. Look up the laughable resale value of diamonds. A diamond you buy in any jewelery store will lose more value the moment after you pay the overpriced jewlers' shop price than a brand new vehicle loses after you buy it from some some shady car salesman and drive it off a car lot.

4. If she ever divorces you, the rings you gave her will be legally considered hers to keep, as she technically held up her end of receiving the conditional wedding/engagement rings gift by having married you. She will then sell them off to a pawn shop or jewlery joint for about 5% - 10% of whatever you paid for them. I.e., say you spent $2k on her diamond rings, she'll get about $100 - 200 when she sells 'em off. If you paid $10k for them, she'd get maybe $500 - $1k, depending on where she goes.

5. She'll probably have the rings pawned off within a day or two after announcing she wants a divorce.

I was just describing the differences. I don’t consider Tiffany’s a “mall brand” either, but I Have never shopped there and don’t know what exactly they do. If it’s a custom jewelry store, then it’s def NOT a small brand. Tiffany’s might have a large mark up due to the name, but it could also be that they have the best diamonds too. A low quality 1k diamond will be a fraction of a 1/2k diamond of the highest quality.

I think Tiffany has a pretty massive markup just because you’re paying for the name — which in my perspective has its own pros and cons (ded fkn Srs)

So my point about expensive rings not saving a marriage just.....not worth discussing I assume?

People come from all walks of life. They prioritize value in different manners.

For me, i strive to find balance.....ie best value for my money. That typically invovles cutting out a lot of the middle men in a lot of industries.

How many other things would you call "investments" when they lose over 50% of value the moment you finish paying for them? Or is it just diamond jewlry that gets a pass on that?

So which is it, the value of the diamonds and gold goes down, or she is looking for a fast and easy way to sell it? These two things are not the same.

Anytime you sell to a shop, they will give you less so they can make a profit. A private sale will get you more money, but will take more time to sell. Inflation alone will increase the value, but as I stated earlier, these are long term investments that take 20+ years, but that’s no different than investing in a large cap company that has less volatility.

Jewelry can be seen as an investment. Make sure it’s quality though. The ring I bought was small, but it was very high quality. The diamonds and gold will appreciate over time, but it’s a long term investment, meaning, don’t expect to get a good return for at least 20 years

The issue is people buying jewelry they can’t afford. Most young people are in the poverty bracket, and move up out of poverty by 30, and peak at around 38-42 consider a smaller ring to start and decide later if you want to invest in something more.
lol jewelry is almost never an investment. The raw materials only slightly appreciate but most of the cost is for the design and people wont want a used ring. Go on and tell your gold digger you are going to buy her a used ring and see the look of hatred and disgust hit her face.

It's the diamonds themselves that are drastically overpriced.

90% of the money she gets back when she sells it during the divorce process will be from the gold bands.

Also, you do not know what the term "investment" means.

Zero judgement here for what others spend on......unless they are trying to floss and wearing fake or cheap stuff
But on the flip side, you said it.....the only people that actually care are women. Unfortunately some women care what other women think. Its part of societal grooming I guess.
