Let me break this down for the mathematically illiterate. When you buy jewelry you are pay far far above the cost of the raw materials. if you sell it for the raw materials you wont get **** even if gold appreciates 5x in value. People spending big money on jewelry dont want a commodity, they want a customized luxory item they can flaunt to their peers. If you want to speculate/invest on price changes in gold and diamonds, jewelry isnt the way to do it chief.

Also, you do not know what the term "investment" means.
There are too many factors to make such an absolute conclusion. Time of year, market variables, economic stability, inflation…all play a role. Inflation is what causes diamonds to go up on value the most. Again, making the pawnshop argument is a straw man.

A high quality diamond will increase in value more, but the amount of people you can sell to will be less, which means, more time to sell. Using the argument that women are high in trait neuroticism, also plays a role.

I can see where you are coming from....I had to ask because most people i hang with dont ask thoe kinds of quesitons. Most of those people associate quality with name.....vs other details but I totally get where they are coming from.

For me, I would rather wear a super high quality piece of clothing from someone nobody has ever heard of vs paying extra for same quality with a name on it. But I understand that is MY choice and value definition.

As far as investment goes — it’s definitely a depreciating asset IMO (ded fkn Srs)

There will always be outliers - but I imagine 95% of engagement rings will lose 66%+ of resale value

The easiest way to get over this in your mind is to associate ZERO monetary value to the item once it is purchased. Anything else is upside.
If you have to factor in residual value on a diamond engagement ring into your purchase to justify affording it (not saying you are bro)....you should probably be looking at spending less

biggest scam in all of history. I spent 13k - my wife DGAF, she'd have been happy with a $500 ring, but I was hoodwinked back then. I'm constantly aware-ing my son and daughter that what a scam the diamond business in. Get a moissanite or worst case lab-grown.

Spent 6k on it. Enough to get something nice but not gaudy. It really comes down to personal financial situation, but engagement rings are pretty stupid so only spend more if you’re baller status financially and NOT because you’re feeling pressure to.

Other pro tips:

- buy online isn’t tacky at all, she won’t know difference. If she does (it has to be at Tiffany’s!) then you should dump her anyways. A diamond is a diamond, and online will save you 10-20% because you aren’t paying for some chain shops advertisements

- go slightly down in size. Ex. A .9 carat instead of 1.0, or 1.9 instead of 2.0. You can get big savings here and the difference isn’t visible to the untrained eye

- learn all that Cs stuff and find something you like that reaches a decent threshold across all. Different people have different values though.

I think you can be frugal, without being cheap. Part of logic is that a engagement ring should financially hurt. If you buy your girl a 1k ring but she sees you every month spending 5k on car parts or whatever then that’s a bad look. But if you’re financially starting out and live very frugally then a 1k ring might have a ton of meaning.

I spent 6k on mine , was making just around six figures at the time. But am a massive cheap ass so that number still hurts like hell because I never spent that much ever on anything for myself.

Look, bud. I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.

If you're trying to marry a woman that obsesses over retarded bullchit like "being able to tell her girlfriends he went to Tiffany's", then have fun being broke your entire life for as long as you are with her.

I know the misc is full of CEO hustlers who make $10k /day, and another $10k when they are sleeping at night, but set that aside from a moment. The fact of the matter is, people who say chit like "I spent $8k on my wife's wedding rings when we were first married, then 'upgraded' to a $30k ring for our 10 year anniversary" are always broke. Why? Because rich people don't get rich by spending $ out the assss on bs luxury items that are overpriced 10 - 20x what the raw materials are actually worth, and it's always forever broke retards who actively brag about how much money they spend on chit in general.

But how do you know $30k is "spending out of the arseee" for that said poster?

The more you talk the more you look and sound mad/silly.
The OP is a level headed dude that makes a decent living. For him to at least consider tiffany is not crazy. Im not saying Tiffany is where I would buy a ring.....but he's not me.....but i would be willing to bet the dude wont drop more than he can comfortably afford for most people's average definition of afford. Hence why he is asking these questions to gain perspective.

Investments are things you buy that have a reasonable possibility of either appreciating enough, or being used for business purposes enough in a way that makes you a profit for the money you initially spent.

You can't apply that concept to a depreciating asset like a diamond that is 100% guaranteed to lose chit tons of value the instant you buy it lol.

You're the type of guy who buys a giant assss pickup that gets ~8 mph in town to use as his daily driver even though he only uses it to haul a camper and a boat about 5x total a year, then tells his buddies "it's an investment, because I really, reaaaaaaally wanted one, guys!"

yeah I agree with you for the most part

The girl is not very materialistic at all - doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want her to be “proud” of the ring or that she’s immune to the opinion of others

This purchase isn’t make or break for me and I feel pretty good about our compatibility when it comes to frugality and spending (ded fkn Srs)

Diamond engagement rings are the longest ongoing ruse in modern history.

This was a scam perpetrated by a guy named Oppenheimer and was funded by the Rothschild family. Take from that what you will.

Don't fall for the bullchit.

If you want to do an engagement ring, use a cheaper, more perfect lab created diamond or sapphire and save your money for a down payment on a house.

Lol yep. And you can’t outearn a wife who is spend crazy. I have numerous friends from grad school who have high powered careers (investment banking, corporate law, management consulting, etc) who are stressed all the time financially because of that lifestyle approach.

It’s not just she wants to tell her friends he went to Tiffany’s (whatever that means). She will want to tell her friends she got married at X expensive location. She will want to show her friends her Y brand new model car. She will want to tell her friends the kids go to Z private school and that they are vacationing at XYZ exotic location this year and live in ABC neighborhood and wow a peloton ad I want one of those and so fourth

All of this comes from a need to show off which comes from insecurity. Yes this is the misc and yes I’m sure there’s people worth multiples of me that can write those big checks without breaking a sweat, but most people that get sucked into that stuff are 100% suckers.

Warren Buffet once said two things matter equally to your ability to build wealth. Your job, and your wife. Getting a high maintenance woman is setting yourself up for a miserable life.

Imagine following the DeBeers guidelines lmao.

Diamonds hold no value. Whatever you feel like spending, cut it in half. Also matters if you wife is on SS bulk or LTC. I wouldn’t spend anything over 4k or so.

BTW, keep in mind, low quality diamonds won’t see much appreciation. They don’t have as much scarcity. High quality diamonds will see much more due to their scarcity. As mentioned before, it might just take longer.

Most people own low quality diamonds.

De Beers is a monopoly. They literally control the market value based on production and output. They have more control over low quality diamonds than high quality.

But some people have provided evidence along with the fact that i dont need to see a paystub if you pay attention to details.

If you asked most people what the LP640 feels like at 7k RPM in second gear feels like, they wouldnt be able to accurately explain it. Only people that have driven that car or own that car could tell you with accuracy.
Sort of like algining with someone on what the beach smells like....but the other person has never actaully been to the beach. You can discuss what you have read in books or seen in movies, but you would never be able to describe or understand that smell.

Its like the "bags of sand" joke in 40 year old virgin.
So yes while most americans live pay check to paycheck, not all do. And because I know where OP is coming from, i know certain perspectives given here (not just by me) can help.

And if its certain forms of proof you are seeking.....i know people that bet more in one hand then the upper range of rings being discussed here.....https://i.imgur.com/19LtvJL.jpg

Is that enough for you or let me guess....you want to see a bank statement right?

You're getting some good advice; I don't have much to add other than try to figure out what she wants. Some women care how much the ring costs and would feel a little bad talking to friends about her ring if hers cost the least in her friend group. Other women would feel self-conscious with a massive rock on their hand and would worry about losing or damaging it. Similarly, some men would feel embarrassed if their wife had the lowest cost ring.

I'm wired more to worry about loss and damage versus not spending enough, but I get it that some people care about those things. I also understand that a lot of money to one person might not be a lot of money to another. I spent less than most in this thread, but it was a lot of money to me 20 years ago. My wife still loves it. I know you're a HVM so dropping some money on a ring is no big deal for you, but even if you can, spending a bunch might not be the best depending on what you and your girl value.

If you want to do an engagement ring, use a cheaper, more perfect lab created diamond or sapphire and save your money for a down payment on a house.
I would say do NOT go with a fake diamond unless you talk it over with the woman first. She may get it appraised for insurance purposes and they will find that it is not a real diamond and then she'll be pissed.

Another option is to buy a used engagment ring - there was a website for them but they are on ******** as well. Then have a jeweler remove the diamond and put it in a new setting for your finance. Let someone else eat the depreciation and the settings are cheap

Zero

Srs

If a woman is your best friend and a **** buddy, she should be smart enough to not crave such stupid shiet as rocks. Otherwise you shouldn’t be with her at all.

Money is for investing, steak, Tesla, and bill paying, not for idiotic manufactured fraud like some rocks from the ground.
