Probably watching someone burn alive in a car crash. (Legs trapped and we couldn't pull him out). Oil caught fire and we used 11 fire extinguishers but couldn't get the fire out.

I've had a few people die while I was working on patching them up. But nothing will ever replace the smell of someone burning.

suicide jumpers, workers falling from buildings, suicides, really bad car accidents where you need the fire department to cut through the vehicle to get to the patient.

nothing compared to combat vets

at least the **** we see most of the time that is terribly gruesome is just pure accident/risk/freak occurrence

for me at least my brain pretty much removes most of it from my memory quick, probably a defense mechanism. Ive probably TOTALLY forgotten so much sht ive seen and done, sometimes i look back at the sht I did and cant believe it but you get put in a role and are suppose to play the part and you either do and succeed or dont.

Your a cop?

Cops just stand on the outskirts directing traffic while FIRE and EMS take care of the people.

FIRE - extricate

EMS - life support

COPS - traffic

Guy was breaking up a fight between two pitbulls, one came up and bit him in the groin resulting in punctured and crushed testicles and damage to the penis. I will never forget the look on the dudes face realizing that his nuts were just chewed up by some land sharks.

Its not the worst thing I've seen but it's the one thing that sticks with me more than other things I have seen. I will never underestimate the amount of damage those dumb fuking dogs can do and will not think twice about shooting one if needed.

No longer a 1st responder but I have a scene.

Was coming home at like 11:30 pm. cold with a light rain. An animal had been struck by a vehicle before me, wanna say large racoon. It was trailing it's entrails and they were steaming in the cold, it was just trying to get back across the road dragging its guts. The steam off the entrails in my headlights just haunted me.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

I knew a guy who worked in EMT, please do not read below if you are easily disturbed:

One time he was tasked with cleaning up a murder of five people, who were each tied circularly to a post back-to-back and then ritually killed with shotgun blasts to the head.

I don't work in EMT, but I have lived in a lot of dangerous neighborhoods and witnessed several shootings and murders, as well as having my own life threatened at times by thugs with guns. I also lived in DC during the 2020 protests and riots and witnessed the corpse of a man in the street who died during a confrontation between rioters and the National Guard.

I think society needs people who are mentally strong to confront the most gruesome aspects of human nature. It takes a lot of resilience to keep your head after witnessing extreme violence and I thank the Lord that He is always there to listen and guide us through trials.

Call bullchit. Because first of all, cleaning up a murder scene is literally NEVER a job for EMS.

All we do, if not BLATANTLY OBVIOUSLY dead, is confirm no heart rhythm with an heart monitor.

Out of all 3 major first responders, EMS often comes into closest contact with the dead.

I didn't see it myself, it's just a story he told me.

It makes sense that he would at least be among the first to show up.

Now that you put it that way, maybe he was pulling my leg, the guy was pretty nuts.
