A lot of people will tell you that buying a home is a good investment, but “that couldn’t be further from the truth,” says Peter Mallouk, a certified financial planner and president of wealth management firm Creative Planning.

Young homeowners in particular have figured that out the hard way: Underestimating the hidden costs is the No. 1 reason millennials who do own homes have regrets.

This is true for uneducated people for sure.

Rent is straight forward, even dummies can account that every month they need X amount of dollars for rent.

Owning a house though, there's a surprising number of people who don't even know property tax is a thing let alone accounting for other bills and maintenance of the house and property. So usually these people buy houses that they think they can afford the initial cost without accounting for anything else, and then they slowly get underwater in debt.

What a joke, yeah, but where will you live? You'll still be paying rent and it goes up, except for taxes, your mortgage stays the same. It's probably a wash with upkeep BUT you are building equity. Also, you can do a lot of housework yourself if you have an aptitude to learn and have some initiative. You can double your home value, do a lot of the work yourself and build equity that way. Can't do that "renting"

real estate pays you back in a tax shield if you're in the states, so that guy spouting bs about RE being a bad investment is a bozo, my mortgage is fixed at 2.9 for 30 years. guccy on that front.
