Why do narcissists shut down and try to ostracize you once they've been found out?

It's like they manipulate you as long as they can until you notice then they get all quiet and want to get rid of you asap

Well they can’t really acknowledge they are narcissists if they have a realistic view of what it is, because it’s damaging to their ego. So they cope by ignoring being selfish and wouldn’t exactly like being reminded of it every time they try to lay on some bullchit about how great they are.
