Lifting is the best way to beat depression
Just kidding. it's not.
"Get a 6-pack and see if you are still depressed."
It's the dumbest advice I've ever heard.
As a gym addict, I used to spend way too much time in the gym to procrastinate on other important areas of my life. Made me even more depressed when I was working out 2 times a day while neglecting my other responsibilities.

Cardio is better for elevating your mood
Lifting doesn’t elevate my mood at all but 30 mins on the treadmill or going to a boxing gym does

99% of depression is self-inflicted
Having a purpose in life + responsibility cures depression. The lifting just gives you confidence and helps build discipline

Activity disorder can be as bad as an eating disorder. If you overdo exercise it can take over your life and make you anxious, depressed and injured.

For some that adjustment might be the difference. It's about moderation and balance of healthy habits. If someone isn't lifting at all and depressed, lifting might be the best way to beat depression for them, specifically.
As others have mentioned ITT cardio seems to be a quicker endorphin fix than lifting. Lifting is more about the long-term.

Gonna go progress my ability to climb a rope without using legs at the gym today. Work on my front/middle split and pancake. Some other stretches. Hanging L-sit, skin the cat to German hang. Maybe really go at front lever or really go at planche or sorta both, but not really. Go to the gym, have fun trying to be able to do stuff I never thought I could do when I was just lifting weights.

Someone going through depression isn't likely gonna be regularly going to the gym.

Anyone whose ever thought there was a way to beat depression other than finding and dealing with core issues that are causing it is a legit moron. It’s not a natural state of mind.
