I can’t help but feel like this is going to be a horrible contract solely because it’s the Rangers. If deGrom signs the exact same contract with the dodgers he wins 3 CYAs in 5 years.

The Dodgers could sign Taijuan Walker away from the Mets and turn him into a Cy Young winner after pumping him full of PEDs like they do with all of their mediocre players turned superstars to be fair.

Mets had a real opportunity to turn the Degrom exit in their favor by pivoting properly to Rodon and instead they just picked up another 40 year old pitcher waiting to break.

$43 mil for next two years for this guy plus another $35 mil in 2025 if he pitches 140 innings in 2024. Not if he pitches well, just if he pitches those 140 innings at all.... lmao

No reason to believe Verlander won't continue doing what he's done his whole career. 200+ IPs with elite ratios. Mets did well letting DeGrom go and signing Verlander.

It’s been 4 years since he’s thrown 200 innings. He threw 175 last year, didn’t play before that, and covid was before that.

If he hits 170 innings again at age 40 Mets should consider themselves lucky.


Regardless moving on, Phillies land Turner on a deal I actually think is good for them. The length is bad obviously, but it doesn’t really look like they paid him that much more in total value I wouldn’t say. They managed to spread it across more years which is probably in their advantage even if he doesn’t hold up near the back end.

Meanwhile Braves doing nothing to fill their SS hole smh….

I'd have way more faith in Verlander staying healthy than Degrom. And a 2 year short deal was perfect for them. Was a good move.

Even if he does Verlander sh*ts the bed every October. Surprised so many in here would rather have him over Rodon. This is a break for the Braves and everyone else in the East. The Mets were obviously going to bring someone back in, they picked the wrong person imo. Degrom has the most talent, though he's a question mark to be on the field. Rodon has the better upside being younger. And Verlander is the worst of the bunch. Everyone falls off at some point and he's a year by year guy that could go at any moment. Just because it hasn't yet doesn't mean it won't. There's always a first year for the fall off and he's been riding in the danger zone plenty long, same as Scherzer. Now they have two of those guys and just because they've gotten away with it in Scherzer case so far doesn't mean the threat is gone.

Braves are doing it too with Morton but at least with Morton we don't consider him our #1 or #2. When he blows up and starts to suck like he did last year, the damage isn't as significant because we're not leaning on him to be the guy like the Mets are trying to do.

Scherzer got blasted down the stretch by any relevant team 4 runs allowed against ATL and NYY in September. Another 4 runs against ATL in that critical series at the end. And TKO'd by the Padres who hung 7 on him in the playoffs. He beat up on OAK, MIL, COL, and WAS in between but the guy was too old to finish strong against good teams.

As for Verlander, his only good start in the playoffs was against the Yankees. Maybe that's why you guys like him so much, that's what you see first hand so it makes sense. But in reality he was terrible. The Mariners torched him. The Phillies torched him again in the first game he had. The second game Verlander managed to get out of jams against the Phillies but he had baserunners all over him in that one. Very fortunate he only allowed one. If you want to call that a good game I suppose you can but that's more on the Phillies failing to execute with him on the ropes.

You look at Verlander's game log and he played nothing but trash offenses all last year during the season too. He saw the Yankees once and the Jays once. Those were the only top 10 offenses he faced last year. The tune up against the Phillies on Oct. 4th was after they clinched and played reserves so I'm not giving him credit for carving up AAA players.

What's he going to do when he plays the Braves and Phillies lineups 3-4 times a year each this season? Mid 3's ERA season coming up. You heard it here first. And sure that's serviceable, but who wants to pay $43 mil for a 3.50 ERA pitcher?

Verlander is about to get hit with a hard wake up call in 2023. This is the last I'll bother saying on it. I'll just bump these posts at the AS break when the Mets are under .500.

They'll probably trade for Reynolds and sign some other garbage. Then gas light us saying the team is better than last year.
