I didn't really understand the football hype until I came to USA and started watching it. There are some flaws like the whole coinflips often times deciding winners in draws and teams icing kickers with timeouts, but it's a sport where seconds feel like minutes. People crash, the ball is thrown amazing distances into small windows, players are extremely fast or extremely strong - sometiems both. A lot of rules, but a lot of small things to watch

It's not without its share of entertainment value. I watch it and I do enjoy it but it is a heavily flawed sport that feels bloated for the wrong reasons.

In a lot of ways I agree. Where is the skill in being handed a ball and running as far and fast as you can before someone drags you to the ground? Catching a ball requires marginally more skill, but not by much. And throwing does require some skill, especially reading where to throw it. But you already mentioned the QB being the one position that requires some skill.

There's really not much to practice for 99% of the positions. Practice basically just consists of working on agility drills and strength training. Every other sport requires much more skill and practice. Basketball dribbling is a legitimate skill. You don't carry the ball wherever you go, you have to dribble it. Shooting is also a skill, much like throwing of a football which only one position does in the sport.

Then you have baseball. Fielding takes considerable skill. Being able to barehand balls, quick reactions to liners hit at you, throwing involved as well. Hitting and pitching obviously both take tons of skill as well which should go without saying.

Then you have hockey, skating on ice alone is a skill.... so once again even being able to move around the surface of the playing area, much like basketball, requires some skill. Goalies of course require their own unique skillset guarding the goal. Everyone requires skill with the stick in order to maneuver and shoot the puck.

Then there's golf.... do I really need to keep going?


Literally every sport requires tons of skills to be practiced and perfected. Football requires almost no skill for the majority of the positions. Just be big and fast and strong and run far before being dragged to the ground (or reversed if your defense, do all those things until you do drag someone to the ground).

Out of the 3 hour game there's literally 60 minutes of action. It's a 60 minute play clock.

The other 2 hours is TV advertisements, which is why it's actually pretty boring to attend a game. But that's how the coaches and players get paid. If you're sitting in the stands there isn't anything happening. You just wait. Not even close to enough time to get up and go to the bathroom between plays.

He's quite obviously talking about technical skill, not tactical skill. I don't think anybody denies tactics play a big role in handegg.

One of the best parts of the game is the anticipation of the next play, specially when things get down to the end and its close. I hate commercials but saying there is no action between plays is dumb. There is a lot going on if you actually watch it. Personal changes, how they line up, coverage, etc.

I have a buddy who records the games and fast forwards through a lot of it. Completely killing the vibe of the game. Go watch a 5 min recap of any game. Its bam bam bam and truly sucks for the fan experience. Its pointless.
