Ill give you some Goggins-level advice. 'Just don't complain and run on the bad knees and ankles. Reframe the crunching noises as the sound of success. If the doctor tries to get in your way by removing your foot just ignore that fool and run on the stump. Stay Hard'

His message isn't telling you to go run an ultra marathon like him. His message is to give whatever you're pursuing literally everything you have.

He likes running. Some people might put that same effort towards golf, football, or even reading. Whatever it may be it doesn't matter.

Giving everything you have to one endeavor is a good way to live out of balance and harmony with the universe.

Rather spend time with my kid than be a pro video game player. Rather spend time with my friends than practicing my jump shot trying to crack the NBA. Rather sleep in and let my body recover from lifting and the week than wake up at 5 and prepare to run 100 miles. Meh.

And that's fine. The majority of people do like balance like that.

But don't expect to become the next Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, or any top level professional without going all in.

Like your video game example, it doesn't matter how talented you are. You're not going to be able to compete with the pros only putting in 4-5 hours a day playing time.

Very uninteresting person.

Edit: I feel similar about Jocko. I thought the book extreme ownership was silly. I work in corporate so I guess im not surprised companies pay them as “consultants”. They dropped gems like “your teams are too large think SMALL UNIT TACTICS LIKE IK THE SEALS” an it’s like ok, any company that doesn’t understand that is ****ty for other reasons.

But the main thing was when Jocko said he only gets 5 hours of sleep a night. But always works out in the morning. Worst thing you can do for yourself is to deny your body sleep.
It's his branding. Some of my management recommended Extreme Ownership and I mean I get it...take ownership as much as you can from beginning to end on a project, your life, your relationships, etc. It's not really anything "new" but I think he's hired as a consultant because he may inspire companies and organizations that may be struggling in this department.

For awhile he had some gfs and seemed normal but then he discovered running. He now runs Goggins-style ultramarathons, obsesses about his "training" and diet, and hasn't had a gf in over a decade. He has absolutely no friends, and spends his whole day either stretching, running, or meal prepping. He used to be interesting to talk to, and now he can barely speak coherently. All he can talk about is running. He's a legitimate runningcel, and this is compared to his alchy days and early sobriety where he was extremely engaging and had friends/a gf. It seems just as chitty as other addictions to me, provided you take it that far.

I myself have been addicted to alcohol, drugs, extreme dieting (anorexia), and exercise. I've almost completely ruined my life from exercise addiction an underrating for my extreme workouts that were driven by nothing but extreme self-hatred & a Goggins-esque "stay hard" mentality. It's caused me just as much suffering and social isolation as anything else could, and the same goes for my uncle.
I do think Goggins' mindet is that of a sociopath focusing extremely on ultramarathoning, etc.

It seems those that are former addicts turn one form of addiction to another and to some degree have a sort of boring life so they are not lead astray again. I get the critiques of Goggins' but hey it does help some people.

But mentioned as asides is that he has a different wife or girlfriend each time, that he gains and loses kids, that he never gets promoted within the military, etc etc.

His physical stuff is the real deal, but other than selling books about how to succeed in life, he was never actually succeeding in life.
He didn’t get promoted because nobody in the military liked him. In his book he said he only joined the military to push his body. He didn’t care about the other stuff. He joined an elite special ops mission driven branch of the military just to test out his “get hard” persona.

He was at points in charge of PT and would put everyone through the same stuff that he needed to do to fuel his addiction. Nobody in the seals liked him, and that’s saying something. These are not lazy guys. They just know they don’t need to be subjected to ridiculous things that compromise their longevity. Goggins is just obsessed with one thing and that is pushing his body to its absolute limit for reasons that started with childhood trauma. You don’t need to be to the point where a doctor tells you almost destroyed one of your organs to reach your own personal mental milestones and physical achievements in life.
