Anyone in Information Technology? I'm looking to find my first real job

I have the A+, MCP and AWS Cloud Practitioner certs. I have 4 months exp working as a desktop support analyst and a few months as an imaging technician.

What kind of job would you think I'd be able to get? and is help desk as bad as they say it is?

Maybe try for a Sys Admin role but you need a boatload of experience in a variety of technologies.

4 months experience isn't that much and it would likely just land you another Desktop Support role which isn't a bad thing.

Spend about 3 years in Desktop Support while adding some certs and more doors will open. Possibly sooner if you make friends with the right people, SRS.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't know what certs to get. CCNA no because I don't like working with the command prompt/dont think I'd be smart enough for networking. Which certs would you recommend?

CompTIA Security+ certification is a good one to have and it pairs well with the CompTIA A+.

Maybe look into something cloud related since you already have an AWS cert?

How does it "Pair well" with A+? I have the Security+ book because it was going to be the next cert I get but 90% of the people I talk to say Comptia is sh!t...

I am a Sr Sys Admin who started in Helpdesk, busted my a$s for a year and got a small promotion, got a bunch of windows server certs and ccna and when a sys admin left I applied for his rols and had a bunch of people vouch for me and got it. Once I was a sysadmin they paid for all my training and conferences and certs to further my skills.

Pro tip: be super personable when helping people on helpdesk. They are ALL talking about you behind your back. I actually got through a few layoffs (like 2008 , etc) because people in various departments were telling management not to get rid of me. The guys that were not sociable or prblematic got let go. In good times you can have an attitude and if you know your stuff it usually won’t be worth their time to replace you. But during down markets, you’ll be the first on the list to go.

Interesting. Good tip. The thing is I want to avoid the traditional sit in a cubicle help desk becuase I think I'd go crazy being on the phone for 8 hours. Desktop support is more my thing as its some help desk some in person fixes. Its just theres no direct way UP from Dekstop Support(no way to get raises) where as help desk theres level 1 level 2 level 3(and raises) right?

The security+ builds on the basic security concepts covered in the CompTIA A+ material. The security+ will open doors for government jobs and at the very least help you pave your way into a security role by proving you understand the fundamentals.

Cloud Security is another realm you may want to explore, but of course the challenge is getting the proper experience to break into your desired role.

I have it. I wasn’t going to pick it. But my last job I was working for a Microsoft partner doing cloud migrations for government contractors. My work wanted me to get that because if I did then our while company qualified to get more business funneled to us from Microsoft for FastTrack engagements etc. my current job it probably helped get as well as they are intereted in looking at Azure/Microsoft Virtual
Desktop and we manage our desktops with Intune.

Thanks for reminding me, i have to renew that one or another one soon.

Depends what direction you want to take your IT career. I’m a cloud engineer and I enjoy it. Comptia gets a bad rep because they are typically too generic and dont provide much depth.

I would suggest learning:

1. Networking. Be able to understand what subnets are, NAT gateway, how HTTP works, etc.

2. AWS. You already have your CP which is good, next I would start studying for Solutions Architect- Associate.

3. Terraform. Can be daunting at first, but really easy to get the hang of because it’s a declarative language and easy to write/read. IAC is starting to become the standard.

4. Git. Source control is has been a standard for awhile. Don’t need to be an expert, just know what a branch is, how to make a commit, etc.

I’ve found it more successful to do a project that I document in Git. Doesn’t have to be complicated, just follow a tutorial online.

It also makes it easier for the interviewer because it provides a talking topic for you to showcase you know some technologies instead of being like “oh you got X cert, cool”

When I was applying for jobs a year so ago quite a few jobs wanted links to your LinkedIn profile and Git repository.

Im in IT network support, and yes I do stare all day at the command line.

My advice if you can is to get into an IT sales position. We have all kinds of account executives and client service managers that dont know fukking ****. I guarantee they make more money than me with wayy less stress.

Another option would be going the cybersecurity pentester route. Has a good amount of in office/on site variety and pays stupid well, but is very hard to get into and is somewhat genius level. Youll be working with other incel autists likely lole.

Yeah I don’t have much in mine, just some environments I built out with terraform and some k8s files, but it makes a huge difference.

Some of what I listed may not be applicable as a sys admin, more of an engineer role. But that’s where the money is (aside from being a programmer).

I've worked in the IT field for about 15 years and my suggestion would be to learn new technologies and make yourself marketable. Python is a good programming language to learn and getting the certification is only great if you have the real-world experience to back it up on your resume. So depending on what portion of IT you want to get into (programming, security, networking), I would try to sharpen skills in that area and also apply for those jobs

Yeah if you can automate one thing it shows that you can learn to automate something else quickly. My role now has some automation but personally i mainly use Powershell.
