Your identity (incld., name, DOB, address, SS number, etc) serves a function in day to day living, and at this point in time, society would struggle without this - but identifying as a random thing to look cool on instagram is plain stupid.. or worse yet identifying with a certain culture or subculture is even dumber.

They're not illusions in the sense where you for example build up race cars and drive them on the weekend, so you call yourself a racer and if somebody challenges your claim 'being a racer' you go ape sh*t and try to race them to win a street race and crash into a young couple with a kid in the back seat, planting your stupid ass into what you'd call the illusion of a jail cell, which is very very real once you're there.. unless you know how to disconnect... in which case you probably wouldn't be in a jail cell, although I'd say there's been a few circumstances where prison inmates have 'found god' as they call it.

Compare and contrast this to an identity including name, DOB, street address, SS number, bank account details, etc and you'll understand that one is basically a necessity when dealing with billions of people world wide.
