I have to physically go into the DMV to renew my plates in Missouri. The time it takes me to go into the DMV (which is in the hood) is worth ~$100-200 to me. I get a ticket, on average, every 2 years for having expired plates, and the ticket is only $120... and I don't even renew my plates afterwards, just wait another couple years until I get another fine.

Am I missing something, or is it really easier to just never renew my plates and keep paying the tickets, because they don't cost any more than going to the DMV and renewing the plates? (100% srs). I can at least pay tickets online using my credit card, which I can't do to renew my plates...

I just figure paying a $120 ticket every couple years is a lot easier than going into the hood, waiting 2 hours, and dealing with rude DMV employees

It depends how your state handles consecutive renewal violations and if the local cops are the type to keep tabs on you when you drive to check if you renewed.

Wow that sucks. Ever since the Pandemic we've been able to do practically everything online with Vslifornia DMV

cop wanted me tow me once because my license plates appeared to be expired. turned out to be a DMV ****up (I had proof I renewed) so he didn't tow me. This was not in CA btw

You can't do it online? In CA we can either do it online or we have DMV kiosks throughout the state (in grocery stores even) where you can handle a couple small things, like renewing your plates.

Do you no longer live in Missouri or something? I would definitely just go to the DMV if it’s an option at all. If not, pray you don’t get pulled over.

They can do this, at least in Texas. There was a Constable in Galveston County that regularly impounded cars for expired registration. The bulk of them belonged to illegals, and since they had no way of renewing it, they couldn't get their cars out of impound. Eventually they became the property of the county who then auctioned it off for the money.

I've actually considered this myself, but my registration is only $28 and they do it online for me ever since Covid.

I think it depends if you're sure on the penalty and what policing is like in your area. Ours typically got better things to do than registration, but the one time I didn't put my stickers on, I got pulled over pretty quickly. I'd certainly risk it myself, if it were in the hundreds of dollars. As long as you aren't driving around drunk and/or high, it should be fine. From my understanding you can still insure your car, so no issue there.

A friend of mine had not registered his vehicle or paid taxes on it when he bought it. Did it for years with no issue.
