e.g. I get vodka and gin fromBlue Spirits.This way I can tell sloots about my vacation there and trick them into believing I'm not a hobomaxxer (which I am).

I keep it simple with big-name, mid shelf chit. Stuff that's OK to drink straight, but that I don't mind pouring in a mixer either.

Whiskey: Jame-O

Bourbon: Buffalo Trace

Scotch: Johnnie Walker Black

Vodka: Tito's

Gin: Bombay Sapphire

White Rum: Literally anything besides Bacardi, that chit is pretty much gin. I drink some San Diego local stuff.

Dark rum: Pusser's British Navy Rum is the actual fukking GOAT. Started drinking it for the history, kept drinking it cause it's friggin amazing both straight and in Coke. Gosling Black Seal is an OK substitute. Flor de Cana is $14 a bottle at Trader Joe's, and is ridiculously crushable when mixed in their watermelon fruit punch.

Tequila: Casamigos. It's not mid-shelf at $50 a bottle, but I fukking hate cheap tequila.

More importantly, if you plan on doing cocktails, you'll want certain things you probably won't think of until you realize you need them.

Shaker/jigger/ a bar tool set basically
Bitters
Simple syrup (easy to make yourself)
Sweet Vermouth
Campari
Chambord
Triple sec
Fresh lemon/lime/orange (results are MUCH better from fresh lemon and lime versus using store bought lemon/lime juice
Coco Lopez (Pina colada)

Def alot more I'm forgetting but I'm not near my bar to check. These are things you wouldn't drink straight but are common incredients for popular cocktails. Ideally just look up the type of drinks you want to make and get what you need.

Also a good ice system. I have a clear ice ball maker, and sometimes I also just make giant blocks of ice in a Tupperware about the size of a shoe box. A simple ice pick from Amazon and a serrated knife and you can carve ice to whatever size you like. Keep your cocktail glasses in the freezer.

Get some decent mid level booze for cocktail mixing, and expensive stuff for drinking straight or over ice.

The path I took was to kinda specialize in one type of drink and load up my rot pad bar for that.

I am a rumcel and fukking love tiki drinks. So I keep some odd chit on hand like orgeat on hand for mai tais, a couple mint leaves for mojitis, etc. But you won't catch me dead with a bottle of campari.

Haha fair enough. I love tiki style drinks too brah. I grow mint with an aero garden so I have it fresh 24/7. You really can't go wrong there cause the bishes love that chit too. I have the campari strictly only to make negronis basically.

My main focus of my bar is whiskey/bourbon/scotch. I drink and collect it so I have some special bottles I don't even open and some I only will drink with friends on a special occasion. I have maybe around 20 bottles at the moment.

Mostly Japanese whiskey too. Something about it just hits so different than American.


I love anything with coconut so I make coconut martinis alot. 1800 coconut on deck always.

I also really love a good cosmo and I use strictly Grey goose for that.

Cheapest Scotch I can find. LOL at Grey Gose. Get a fuking Vodka 5 times distilled so you don't taste the drink. That is what vodka distilled to that level is. They din;t taste it and then you rape them.

I don't understand the titos hype. It costs 2x as much and tastes much worse than deep eddy. I can drink deep eddy grapefruit straight out of the bottle no problem.
Deep Eddy is corn-based, like Tito’s, sourcing corn from Indiana farms. Given that the vodka distillation process strips away most everything but the ethanol, the source material for vodka is often a matter of what starch source grows most economically. Considering Deep Eddy is column-distilled 10 times, this really means near-eradication of anything but the ethanol. It’s further charcoal-filtered four times, which theoretically makes it smoother.
Like your Brita water, Deep Eddy is charcoal-filtered.

The reason Jack Daniels is called “Tennessee Whiskey” and not bourbon is because it’s filtered through charcoal in what’s called the Lincoln County Process. (Jack D. seems to be doing fine without the bourbon designation, but we digress.) Charcoal filtering removes impurities, and can affect texture, or mouthfeel, of distillates, which is why Deep Eddy filters theirs through charcoal four times.

It might seem strange to filter the most neutral spirit, but then, if you’ve ever tasted Brita-filtered water and tried the metallic sludge water from your tap again, you’ll realize that some impurities are invisible.

The charcoal part might not matter.

Vodka can be filtered through charcoal, lava rock, sustainable micron paper, or coconut husks. The theory here is that the flavor of vodka, and maybe more realistically its final “mouthfeel” or texture, changes based on what the spirit is filtering through (and how many times). Lest you get entranced by someone selling you $80 vodka that’s been filtered through foraged wedding bouquet flower petals (it could happen), though, know this: Some distillers call this straight-up nonsense, arguing the magic happens in the distilling process, emphasizing source material and distilling style, such as pot or column.

Fortunately for no-nonsense drinkers, Deep Eddy doesn’t go for uber-precious filtration material: Charcoal is run-of-the-mill in a good way, and definitively shown to remove impurities. Just ask your pores.
