Visiting NYC, not what I expected

Compared to UK, Europe, Australia, NZ, Singapore and Hong Kong this place is so backwards, run down and degenerate

It's dirty and unsafe

Full of homeless people and beggars and mentally ill.

Tbh really wish I hadn't come here, it's much nicer at home.

Right from the time we arrived. Some water pipes had flooded the airport terminal and so they wouldn't let any planes disembark til they'd cleared it up. 90 minutes later we finally got off the tarmac and managed to join the queues, but even then it was just sitting in the arrival chutes for another hour cos they had such a backlog.

Seriously, have visited third world countries that don't even use computers, which had more efficient airports.

So since it was so late by the time we got through, we walk outside and use the airtrain and there's a bunch of homeless people sleeping in the train station. Welcome to America.

That’s basically most big cites in America Srs. I’m in dt Denver rn and had crazy homeless yelling and screaming nonsense. There’s poop on the sidewalks every other block lol. Piles of trash on every corner

My GF keeps banging on about visiting NY as she still thinks it's that fairy tale city from 20 years ago. Same with Paris and London. These places have gon to chit due to cultural enrichment.

So embarrassing. I want to cry. It has been to hell in the last few years, especially due to lax crime laws. They released a number of violent repeat offenders constantly. Backwards Politicians in power have ruined major cities.

I live there, but far from the city.

You should have hit me up, I would have shown you the beauty of the more rural part of NY, but also some of the smaller cities that still have nice nightlife, and sightseeing ventures.

I drove through skid row in LA today. Just lol @ people who say "fly over states".

That said LA and NYC are both fun to visit. I've never been to Hong Kong, NZ etc. so I can't compare firsthand, unfortunately.

I've been to Rome and other Italian cities though, it's not much different than NYC when it comes to the unsafe feeling and dirtiness. The only really clean and safe cities I've experienced have been in Poland.

London and Paris are a lot nicer than NYC. I did see a few scam artists operating near the Eiffel Tower, but nothing even remotely like the poverty and desperation in NYC. Didn't have people openly harassing me for spare change in Europe either.

Rome is actually gorgeous. It's insanely old, but very romantic and the Italian people are so kind and lovely.

Haven't been to Poland but Singapore is the cleanest and safest city by far. You could almost eat off the ground there, it's that clean. And even walking round at 2am it felt completely safe. Perhaps their strict laws have something to do with that?

Yeah, it's a shthole. Went back in 2011 for a very short trip and will never go back. Has only gotten much worse SRS. I try to find international flights that go through literally any other airport besides NYC as well

Singapore is clean AF because you'll get charged for spitting gum on the ground.... which is how it should be IMO. In NYC, you can steal and do plenty of other BS without getting in serious trouble. Most likely won't get caught FFS

History aside, Rome is awful imo. The people are loud and rude, it's dirty. It's still amazing though, just like NYC. Both are awful too.

Both Lee Kuan Yew and his son are very very intelligent and ran their country really really well, and in a very nonwestern way. Both won awards from prestigious universities in the UK. Lee Kuan Yew's son was the top mathematics student at Cambridge...

Yep.... Most American people I've met have been really nice and friendly, it's just a hell of a shock seeing how bad it's gotten here. I don't know whether it's partly aftermath of all the covid lockdowns?

My daughter who's traveling with me, is a bleeding heart liberal so it makes it doubly hard as she feels sorry for everyone and wants to stop and help them. It makes it extra scary cos it makes it that much harder trying to keep us both safe.

Yep. It’s a reality check. I always wanted to go when I was younger and when I finally went I hated it. Had to go back several times and always dread it.

Growing up, I can remember thinking of New York as a 3rd world type city. New York in the 70s and 80s was often shown as a dirty crime ridden place, with roaming gangs. Then the city turned around, had less crime, cleaned up, had money. I can remember visiting in the early 2000s and thinking decently well of New York.

Now, with spiking crime levels in New York, and blue politicians not interested in lessening crime, making the place safer, and how run down the city reportedly is, I don't beiieve I'd want to visit New York.

Was reading this article this morning about New York and its continuing crime problems:

"Another career criminal in New York goes on a killing spree"

NY crime rate is actually down compared to 20 years ago. A lot of this is media hysteria affecting your perception. Not saying the crime isn't an issue, but I'm saying it wasn't better in 2000. What did happen is a recent spike relative to like 5 yrs ago. That's why everyone is noticing (that and political bias).

I had been considering a trip but this thread is putting me off.

Nicest cities I've been to in Europe were Copenhagen, Porto, Bruges and Budapest all felt nice clean and safe.

Didn't really like Paris, it was dirty and the people were rude and there some dodgy areas.

I think it is actually down. If anything, crimes are better reported today than 20 yrs ago due to smartphones. But the trend isn't good. There's been a large spike since covid and the police reforms. I think NY's most violent period was in the early 90's.

The unpredictability of mentally ill/ black people who can violently attack you without notice and who have nothing to lose is what turns me off

What about Manhattan? Is this area degenerate too?

NYC is interesting to me because it's like the worlds capital city.

I haven't been to these places so sometimes watch the 4K walking tours.



It doesn't look unsafe during the day in Manhattan. Not many 8/10's walking around though. The Miami walking tour has heaps.

NYC has struggled a bit - during COVID19 around 2 million lost their jobs, many unable to pay rent and so on. Those that do well, continued to do (very) well. Paris and London are very different - NYC has always been known for its 'grit'. Knightsbridge and Mayfair in London as examples are much nicer than Greenwich is, but overall the fact of the matter is that the many junkies/mentally ill in places like NYC, and the near complete lack of support structures for them, mean they have an impact on the city that doesn't happen in London or Paris.

EDIT: Yes, I have colleagues who work in Singapore. If it weren't for the humidity, I'd probably relocate there. Social cohesion, discipline, and simple things like not finding human fecal matter 1 block away from a 3 million dollar apartment are rather attractive.
