Roughly every 100,000 years or so we enter an ice age that lasts about 50,000 years. The Earth has been in a constant in and out cycle of ice ages for millions of years. Currently we are coming out of the last ice age, which covered all of NA up to northern USA in a mile high ice wall at its peak 20,000 year ago. Yes the ice wall is real, humans in Europe/USA literally could see a mile high ice wall inching towards them year by year. All that ice sucks up all the water available in the Earth and lowers sea levels, as in 400ft lower. This would uncover much of the near shore continental shelves. This opened new travel ways for humans. Best theory, really fact at this point, is that Asiatic nomads walked across from Russia/Alaska and followed the coast of Canada into the USA, once past the Ice wall moved south and east. SOme people think the land bridge was not walkable, and more like canoe based island hopping. The best evidence we have of humans in NA dates to roughly 20,000 years ago, but several sites exist that imply up to 100,000 years ago. If true, this would mean we not only have been in NA for that long, but potentially SA as well. There is also a theory that during the last, last ice age a corridor opened in central west Canada, where humans slipped through into USA and south. Some also theorize that Polynesians took boats across the south Pacific and ended up on mainland SA...less evidence, but starting to find some genetic anomolies.

Ice has kept us from exploring the Earth for a long time.
