metal detectors and diggers

Does anyone here have a passion for this kind of thing?

For 2 years of this hobby and digging up finds other than 2-3 dozen silver coins and ≈100 copper coins, I haven't found anything super expensive.

lol

Maybe she wanted to drag you away from the shore and show you the sunken ship with the pirate treasure.

But seriously, I hope you got off lightly.

I thought it was gonna eat me. For real.

A political figure in a far away place had been assassinated and the bad guys departed by sea, so the team that I was on was tasked to go look to see if they had tossed any evidence overboard.

The water was 200' deep, so we had to go solo to save bottom time. I was just the unlucky one, probably because I smell so good.

Never walked with a metal detector on beaches. The nearest one to me is 600 miles away. Too many beer corks and garbage in such places.

Maybe someone here uses old maps and digs in places other than the beaches.

I feel like if you were to find something valuable, it would be on a beach.

After a busy weekend during low tide on the shore

In Europe, for example, there are a lot of cool places where you can find some Roman coins in the woods near the Autobahn

It's so much nicer for the soul than a lost gold ring on the beach.

It was a bit of an ordeal trying to get back to the boat, but all in all just another day at the office.

Didn't they make that illegal on most federal and state land in the US?

I know they used to be everywhere but you never see them anymore.

The old man did it as a hobby...Found some interesting things around farmhouses and old school houses. Knives and coins being common in addition to can tabs, bottle caps and hand tools. On beaches he would the usual junk jewelry and coins. He found one ring that had some value. Can't remember how but it eventually got back to the owner. She was super grateful and offered him a reward. He turned it down. He should have said "maybe you zuk my dink"

Somewhere you have to get some permits, but I do not know much about this in U.S..
In Europe, it is not allowed to dig in recreation parks, historic sites, near private properties, but it is generally allowed everywhere.

That's what I'm talking about, near farms or old villages is always much more pleasant to dig than on the beach and find the coins of the 18-19 centuries and other old staff.

The number of functions in a metal detector may vary depending on the brand and type. Basic models have fewer functions.

Advanced models have more functions and more adjustability. In this article, we will discuss the 5 functions of a metal detector and explain what each function does.

Metal detector settings can appear intimidating at first. Older analog models have knobs, dials, and buttons that can be adjusted. However, most modern models are automated and feature push-button controls.

Like any other activity, the more you practice metal detecting, the better you will become. Beginners prefer detectors because they have automatic features that don’t need complex techniques.

Expensive detectors have extra settings that are complicated and need a detailed user guide to understand.

5 Functions Of A Metal Detector Explained
Typically, the number of settings on a metal detector is proportional to its price. More capabilities make a product more expensive and sophisticated.

The base model is less flexible in that specific arrangement, even if it has the same functionality as the advanced model.

One common example is the “sensitivity” setting, which is available on both base and high-end models. The basic model has four sensitivity levels, but the top model has ten for more precision.

Now, let’s explain the five functions of a metal detector:

Sensitivity Gain
A metal detector’s sensitivity is its ability to find different sizes and types of metal targets. The higher the sensitivity, the smaller the metal fragments it can detect.

Sensitivity enables the user to hear responses from target objects that are buried far below ground. It controls how far underground the coil’s signals will travel.

In the case of certain models of detectors, it is also known as “sense.” The signal gets stronger as sensitivity rises. The depth potential is decreased as sensitivity decreases.

The identification of tiny metals may be compromised by decreasing sensitivity, though. In order to maximize the output of the device without making it unreliable or noisy, metal detector sensitivity settings are essential.
