Set systems. Not Goals. While goals are not a bad thing to have, they only service to create a direction. Case in point: do you know the difference between a winner and a loser in any sporting metric? It's not the goals. They both have the same goal of winning. It's the systems they put in place to achieve that goal. Real winners know that goals will set themselves as you develop. Look at an NBA game. They don't look at the scoreboard every single second, because It's their system that they back that will create a positive direction in the game.
Goals are also easily achieved. Anyone could make the most minor goal, and achieve it. Like cleaning your room. And when you achieve it, you gain a momentary high that's completely artificial, because while you achieved the easiest goal imaginable, you didn't change yourself through it. You have no systems in place. Your room will be messy in a few days anyways. The most success sporting teams, franchises, even people know this. You see this chit in every selfhelp book. Anthony robbins repeats it 20 times a day at his overpriced seminars, because it's proven.
Do you know what the San Antonio Spurs have in their locker room? "The Stonercutter who hammers away at his rock 100 times hasn't budged. But it did when he hit it 101 times". They never focus on the 101st hit being significant. Its the process of the 100 hits that created the 101st hit being effective. Breakthrough moments are delayed. Goals set directions, but systems create guidance. Anything you wish to do. Set that direction, then set systems to create a positive direction in your life. By the way, i'm not saying don't set a goal. I'm saying only ever look at it as a direction you need to go. Now, if you want to set systems. Focus on the 1%ers in life. 1%ers that will give you an edge overtime. Having a system in place will always be important because success isn't where you are right now. It's where you're going.

I'll use myself as example. I'm spending the next 5 years of my life saving so I can buy a house overseas. That's my direction. But, establishing that goal means nothing to me. I know I won't be able to get there without the right systems in my life. So I have set it, then I will move past it. What I need to do is look at parts of my life where I need to improve on so not only will I be ready in 5 years time, but I will be ready for whatever happens. I said again, goals change as your systems progress. Financially speaking, I have set a system of paying off all my debts. Career wise. I have set systems of learning languages. In terms of my personal growth. I have set myself on reading selfhelp books that improve, I have set myself to do basic things really well. Remember a system is the 1%ers that you REPEAT EVERY DAY. Like saving a certain amount each week. Or brushing your teeth. Or cleaning your room so it doesn't become a goal to clean it. Focus on all the things you do, find a way to relay it to your goal, then find a way to improve it by 1% each day. The find out all the things you don't do, do it. Then find a way to improve that by 1% each day. That's what i'm doing and in 5 years the accumulative growth will lead me as prepared as possible for my next life advancement.

Although I would say that the OP isn't quite "God's word", it works extremely well as a truism, to say the very least. I think about it when it comes to bodybuilding or at least physical training with the general goal of self-improvement. Also, what I learned and largely believe is true due to what was impressed upon me during my general Liberal Studies curriculum in college reinforces this - that it's the process that's generally more important; process kind of = system.
When I read some fitness influencers say that you really have to have a specific goal, a target, to ensure success when you enter a gym and embark on physical training, that honestly doesn't really ring super true to me (never really has) - not nearly as much as this post. I mean, having a specific goal can work as a beginning motivator, but what happens when you reach that goal? Where do you go from there? How will you change your methods and motivation and mentality when you reach that goal? I think that in the long run, it's the "just do it" attitude and submitting oneself to processes and systems and long-term learning that will give a person more substantial and more long-term success and greater results than short-to-medium-term goals will.

The problem is you're focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.

Repped Opie for the strong post. Currently reading atomic habits as well and have found it to be a good book. A lot of it is self-explanatory, but it’s always good to remind ourselves sometimes. I also like how the author took it a step further beyond just systems and different techniques to facilitate accomplishments, and included the aspect of changing your identity. Setting a goal is the least effective way to accomplish something. Creating a system to accomplish it is better. But eventually changing your identity into the type of person who does something is the best way to maintain it. And becoming a better version of ourselves is the real objective so it was good to see him acknowledge that aspect.

A good example that everyone here can understand is drinking vs fitness.
System to create fit body
1. Don't drink at night because it makes you sluggish and other side effects.
2. Set alarm to wake up early, prepare to be up early like getting your clothes ready and have your morning tasks done already at night, go to sleep earlier.
3. Wake up, do whatever is left before you need to leave and go to the gym..
4. Go to the gym.
This system starts with two simple actions. Don't drink and set your alarm. The rest flows from there naturally if you really want to do it.
You might need to prep a few days in advance for it, but this is a system and an example of one change that is the crux of Atomic Habits. Habits become ingrained within 30 days or so.
Motivation > decision(s) > action(s) > habit(s) > discipline

Speaking for myself, I think it's never the system, instead, it's the flexibility to adjust or change what you are doing when you recognize it's no longer working, and eventually to adapt.

I think you can know power is not entirely in your control.
Better to align yourself with what will work for you instead of trying to force discipline where it does not fit.

The thing that got me was how the environment you're in/put yourself in shapes your identity and who you are. I look back on different parts of my life and can 100% see it now, even though i had no idea at the time. Mind fking blown that you can literally edit your whole identity just by changing the environment you are in and the people you surround yourself with.
Another good point iv come across so far is the point about progress not being linear. I'm learning Italian atm and can relate to the flat spot he was talking about and losing motivation to keep going. I thought of this thread when i got to the stone cutter analogy
