Remote work coming to an end?

I’m hearing rumblings that corporations are nuking WFH. Our company is about to kill it for certain roles.

Are we all going to have to be commutecels for the big man again, or is there any hope? I thought we had made some progress from covid. Not fully WFH, but hybrid as a new norm…

I don't think it's going to come fully to an end, but a lot of the big companies that embraced it are completely changing their tune.


There will always be some WFH roles, and 'Hybrid' (i.e. in the office 2-3 days a week) is becoming a pretty standard offering for a lot of companies. But the days of most "white collar" office roles in 2020-2022 where they were predominantly remote seem to be coming to an end for now lol (ded fkn Srs)

It's because economy sucks and corporate profits are down. Management has to show the board of directors and shareholders they are doing something to maximize margins.

They already do everything in their power to screw over the working man. Might as well strip their wfh.

This only works if every company colluded on it. I think a lot of people would take a $10k paycut if it meant flexibility hybrid schedule

I think a lot of 'second tier' and 'third tier' companies (i.e.: Not Google, Meta, Amazon, etc.) are going to use hybrid as sort of a recruiting tool to lure decent talent. "Yeah, we pay less than the big guys but you can work in your pajamas for us you ****ing slob" (ded fkn Srs)

First, strong username to post content.

My company is enforcing three days a week in the office as a hybrid now, which is changed from the 2022 policy of "gee, can you pretty please come in three days a week" hybrid plan. Most of my staff are millenials who hate the idea. I do understand, though. We worked remotely for almost 3 years without a single problem, so why should anyone have to commute again now? Is there actually any benefit to the company (other than not "wasting" their real estate investment)? As a VP, I need to really be in at least three days, but I told my staff to schedule their three days and if they don't make it, keep track of the reason. I will consider any absence excused as long as you have a documented reason. I don't even really care what the reason is, as long as it works in a CYA situation if we ever get called out for it.

If your company already owns a giant office complex of course they dont want it sitting empty. They are still paying the utility bills and insurance and stuff like that.

You know this just means more of your taxes going to pay for their unemployment benefits. In the end they get to stay at home and get paid while you are wasting 40+ hours a week paying for it.

Luckily a vast majority of IT/engineering was already remote before any of this happened so it doesn't really affect me at all. Sucks if you were a paper pusher though.

Offices are the same bullchit, nobody works all 8 hours people just pretend they do lol. At home you can get the work done in 4 and then you can chill the rest of the day, while in the office you have to look busy so people think you're working.

I would be doing the same thing regardless of being remote or in office. If remote, I can do **** around the house in my downtime, in office I just phuck off on my phone. There is no difference in productivity between the two. Just a difference in how I utilize my downtime.

Last company I worked at is keeping it (2 days a week). Its the only selling feature really as they underpayment by about 5%. Now I work for government and they're keeping it for two days a seek as well. Seems two home days until corporate leases end.

It’s definitely on the way out, IMO

Reasons:
WFH isn’t as popular as the internet makes it out to be. Some people love it, most people are neutral, and many hate it

For certain kinds of jobs (where creativity and collaboration are crucial), WFH is devastating to productivity on average. The studies about productivity boosting due to WFH were done on jobs like call center employees, not creative/collaborative jobs like software development

Lastly, there’s more people moonlighting and working multiple jobs than you think. It’s so easy to do with WFH. And they are of course non productive employees, but they’re taking advantage of the fact that in most companies it takes so long to fire people. This isn’t possible if you come into an office

I hope they nuke WFH srs. The cry babies complaining about having to come in once or twice a week (hybrid) have annoyed me so much that I’ll happily bite the bullet and go back into the office full time just to see their defeated souls.
