My mind is blown that there is even opposition to a simple ad campaign that would cost virtually nothing for the government to implement.

Good point. Imagine including the cost of services alcoholics suck up in that fifth of vodka.

There has been a campaign like that here in the 80s or so. I think it had 0 impact.

Alcohol is number 1 in two things:

1. Coping agent for plebs.

2. Way to control the masses for the higher ups.

And that is why any attempts at removing it will never work.

going to restaurants would prob survive but you'd have way less people going out for a "few drinks". so i think the restaurant business hit would be considerable too

Banning things isn't the answer. That's a really naive stance. Better to teach people how to be responsible, which the usa fails to do abysmally with alcohol.

He's talking about an ad campaign. For some reason people seem to take the idea as a ban lol. Have your few drinks lol.

No ad campaign needed.
Not sure where they get the numbers, but this shows alcohol consumption peaked in the 70’s and 80’s(of the 1900’s) and that people today still drink as much or more than we did in the early 1900’s.

bro you really think the government running an ad campaign saying alcohol isn't cool is gonna stop people from drinking? Everyone knows the risks and horrible things alcohol can do to you, its not a surprise.
I understand you don't social and probably haven't been to a real party, but alcohol is worth the health risks, helps people open up have fun and clear their mind.
Its unfortunate that its heavily abused, but in moderation its not that bad for you, and nothing compared to being obese.

See the Bill Burr bit about anti-domestic abuse ads on the highway and what the impact of that would be.

Actually I’d say the most likely outcome in that scenario is that the vast majority of those people would just start smoking weed.

But again, Opie is simply proposing a campaign to shift our societal perspective towards alcohol. We tend to over-glamorize any positive it may provide while downplaying the rampant negatives(like the stuff outlined to start the thread). We need a more honest view of it and instead of just thinking it’s something that makes things fun, we should look down on it in some ways as something that is just as likely to cause a person to make stupid decisions or tune into a d!ckhead. Kind of like bringing back slut shaming, but for alcohol.

Misc is filled with proud alcoholics. You'll never convince the misc on the whole that alcohol is a bad thing, even though it very clearly is terrible in almost every way.

I think those ads worked for cigarettes for several reasons:

1. Secondhand smoke sucks ass and everyone hates it, even smokers
2. Cigarettes were never fun. Seen as cool for a time, and produced a small buzz, but never fun.
3. More information about lung cancer scared the fuk out of people

Anti alcohol may slow down consumption, but I don't think it will be anywhere near the effectiveness of the anti smoking campaign. Let's face it, alcohol is fun to drink. It gives you a nice dopamine hit, makes social interaction easier, and makes people seem sexier. If you drink in moderation, you avoid the immediate side effects like hangovers or nausea. Even if that does happen, you're still likely to continue to consume alcohol.

It's also been part of human history for a very long time. We saw how deep the love for alcohol was when prohibition started.

Smoking was all those things. The thing that made it less cool was the ads. Alcohol is also a carcinogen, and actually worse for your health than smoking.

is it really alcohol itself or are you immediately conjecturing and thinking of people that can't control it?

i've honestly drank 4 times in the past 2 years

i just remember growing up how i thought about it. i thought it was the devil. i didnt take a sip until i turned 21. and i realized i still had control when i drank

that kind of made me open up to it

but yea, you can bet your sweet azzhole alchy is super tied into the economy. moreso than worrying about a few drunks

This.
We should not be making legislation based on outliers.
Must people like to have a drink while going out, and I don’t recall ever seeing a drunk at a restaurant.

Take away alcohol it will only get replaced with another vice, and sure enough people like OP will want more government control to restrict your choice…bodily autonomy..unless of course it is the injection of an untested non beneficial vaccine….then that’s okay..but an Old Fashioned whiskey with a steak dinner..nah, that has to stop.

What?

I've never heard of cigarette goggles
Smoking a cigarette isn't "vapor courage"
Smoking doesn't make anxiety drip away and suddenly you're best friends with a stranger at a bar
Smoking doesn't make you lower your inhibitions and more likely to sleep with that 4

The only thing they have in common is they both give a dopamine hit, but cigarettes are nowhere near the level of social lubrication as alcohol.

If you're talking about lowering inhibitions, that is also the source of tons of the problems I listed in OP. That chit is NOT good for society.

And again, this is a fuking ad campaign. Not a ban. So far the best argument I've seen against it is "It probably won't work." OK. So what? Like I said, if there is even a tiny percent chance it works, considering the payoff, we should do it. It's an ad campaign. We have money to piss away on so much other stupid chit, but NOT THIS!

Drinking rates were actually pretty insane pre-prohibition era in the 1900's. Some estimates indicate that Americans drank up to 3x (per capita) more an average than they do in the modern world, as hard as that might be to believe. It wasm't probibition itself that to change, no. But many factors that surrounded prohibition contributed to people waking ghe F up to the fact that it's not normal to consume alcohol on such a regular basis.

I've seen guys on here talk about how they went 2 or 3 months once without drinking, and "nothing changed". #1 a couple months of sobriety will only go so far in terms of repairing the various damages from drinking alcohol like a fish for ~15+ years. Get a solid 6+ months under your belt. That's roughly when enough time will have passed where you'll start wondering what you ever saw in alcohol in the first place. A short time after that, you start getting annoyed by the fact that so many people insist on alcohol being involved in damn near every social activity.

Also, misc is full of alcoholics in denial of how bad their drinking is. I was in that crowd myself until around a year ago when I wised up and realized how ridiculous it all is. Until you can comfortably walk into a bar and have a good time with your buddies without necessarily drinking alcohol, or if you drinking alcohol is involved in a majority of your social events you partake in, you've almost certainly got a problem. Whether or not someome is willing to admit that to themselves is another story.

I was replying to the fact that people used to think smoking was fun. It gives you a nice dopamine hit, makes social interaction easier (by smoking with friends), and makes people seem sexier (due to cigarette propaganda).

You are right that alcohol distorts perceptions. I don't think those purported benefits outweigh those listed in the OP (many of which are caused by those exact distortions) that would be achieved with a simple ad campaign, and without any impact on your ability to drink.

I wouldn’t say always. Many are well aware that they have a problem, they just don’t want to confront it. Apart from the withdrawals and all of that, it usually forces them them to examine the reasons that led them to alcoholism. Those reasons can be as simple as “because I like it”, or they can be some really fuked up things that they don’t want to think about.
