Anybody buy a website domain that's "taken" before?

I'm researching this right now, but curious if anyone's got real experience here.

I have an idea for a business and of course the domain is taken. The WhoIs info lists Domains By Proxy, apparently a privacy company (also owned by the guy who owns GoDaddy) that registers the domain for the real owner and keeps info private. GoDaddy offers to find out if the person will sell-of course for a fee, and then will charge 20% over the asking price. It's fooking annoying that this is the way things are now, I wish they'd just say if the domain owner is willing to sell and the price, and fuk it I'll pay the commission. Seems fukking stupid they hide the info and then charge to find out if the domain owner will sell. Seems an unnecessary risk for the consumer for something that could easily be setup.

My question-is it worth trying to get this domain or is it a waste of time and money? It's only $70 to find out, but if I run into this situation again I don't want to be constantly screwed.

I tried to once about two ywars ago. I contected whoever about it and they send an email back saying that his client had expectations of $19000 for it, so I just ignored him and he kept spamming me every few days, lowering the price each time until he gave up about six weeks later.

Interesting. You actually got to the heart of my curiosity- wondering what chances are of it being a squatter vs a business or individual soaking up website names for future use or just cos. At least with a squatter there's a chance of grabbing it whereas some ahole holding onto it for no good reason won't sell for any price.

Almost certainly a squatter. It always is. Squatters are absolute cretins srs, very often a member of misc's favorite tribe. There's a reason that companies just invent new words now to use as business names. Lots of X's and Z's and weird misspellings. It's specifically to avoid ever having to deal with squatters.

Once they know you'll pay, they are going to squat on every single social media handle, email, all the various extensions, everything they can get their little rat claws on.

It's not worth the hassle honestly. Have dealt with it a few times and the brokers will try to overcharge because they make commission.

You're better off slightly changing the name, or you can use a different extension. Today on the internet it doesn't make a whole lot of difference if you have a .com versus a net or whatever.

If the goal was to sell the domain for profit, why would you conceal your whois info? Squatters WANT people to contact them. If the domain is for sale, it will be obvious.

OP I've used Godaddy's service before with no luck. Seems like a scam because I've always been able to find the person's contact info on my own...if the domain is for sale

What is the domain OP? Don't be a paranoid ****git. Maybe your domain sucks and the misc can think of a better one for you

I don't know why I didn't do this before, but I typed the site name in my browser and it redirects to another site. I guess that company locked it up for future use or something and ain't gonna sell it. Funny thing is their name is bland as heck.

Was thinking adding "Co" at the end of using .shop or .store extension.

Tried buying one the same way. They wanted $19K also (must be their standard starting point). Didn't even respond. I still get emails about it once and while.

I would have paid $1000.

See when it expires. Maybe they will neglect to renew on time. Swoop in on it.

Good luck brah...registrars send about a million emails to the owner before it expires. I own several high value domains and regularly check them to ensure they don't expire. And if a truly good domain expires, the registrar will probably register it for themselves
