I live about 3 hours south of Chicago, so I should survive the initial impact if targeted...

But the fallout and the body's of the astronauts falling out of the sky might get me.

And when I lived up that way I figured that the Great Lakes wouldn't be a top target given the enemy had any sort of desire to physically take possession of the continent. Too great a resource to wreck if you can avoid it.

I think they’d nuke a smaller city further inland away from an obvious target to show they can reach anywhere and people in those smaller towns in middle America who thought they were safe actually aren’t. It would increase the fear level 1000% over nuking a sh!thole on the coast like NYC or LA/SF that no one would actually miss anyway

I don't believe this. Plenty of nuclear weapons were tested on ocean and ground/underground. That's a limited nuclear event and it did minimal damage.
