Unpopular opinion, but I think the episode was really well written minus all the gay stuff. If they had just made Frank's character a woman it would have been great. He's literally playing the woman in the relationship already--starting a fight because he wants to use resources to paint the neighborhood's houses and mow the lawns, planting strawberries, completely dependent upon Bill for survival, etc.

I actually liked that they mostly deviated away from Joel and Ellie in order to give another view of the past 20 years of the apocalypse, and the entire scene where you see Bill's prepper bunker and fortifying his neighborhood was awesome. There was actually a ton of character development squeezed into 45 minutes of this episode. Pedro Pascal's acting was fantastic, especially once you get the reveal that the 80s music on the radio isn't just a generic "trouble" code but that it means that Bill and Frank have not reset the timer, meaning Joel knows his friends are likely dead.

The gay relationship is the reason all the reviewers are calling this the greatest episode of television ever (stunning and brave, etc), but it actuallyiswritten incredibly well in my opinion. I just wish I hadn't been forced to endure watching Ron Swanson, an icon of manliness, get sucked off by a dude.





For all of the clown world stuff in the show, though, it is pretty refreshing to see the writers pointing out that the government is not your friend,especially in pandemic.I feel like that must have been an accident on their part lol. But watching the episode, they might as well have written "SAFE AND EFFECTIVE" on the sides of those military trucks that took all the civilians away.The point of the episode is for Joel to get a truck and for Ellie to get a literal Chekhov's gun

That definitely wasn't in Gaiman's novel. I guess they had to make it "modern" to appeal to western audiences.

For the record I played the first game and skipped the second after it was clear what the writers intentions were. I knew Bill was ghey when Ellie found a mag with a dude on it and she asked why the pages were sticky. I had no idea Frank was ghey and I played it twice back in the day. If you're a pearl clutcher who is deeply offended by even the existence of gays, probably skip the episode. If you can handle a story about a gay relationship with around 30 s total of kissing and under 10 s of implied sexual activity, then I'd recommend the episode.
