When is enough "Enough"?
And, has that number (if it is a number) changed as you got older?

It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got
Never had a hard number in mind personally. Only chased a paid off home preferably with low tax and maintenance expenses.
So many factors, but if you are calculating:
- desired lifestyle
- emergency fund
- life expectancy
- some allowance for inflation
At this point I lean more towards enjoy life now and keep a little something in reserve to secure yourself against real destitution if you can.

Now, I wonder about "a number". It's a shifting goal as I have said elsewhere, now that I'll be a father in July. Something changed in me and though I do (very) well, and my wife does too, I find myself thinking about creating a proper 'retreat'. A near self-sustaining sort of compound where we wouldn't have to live in (now), but always have it as a safety net "in case".
That's why I created the thread - to see if other Miscers think about this sort of thing too.

I think ideally this retreat wouldn't be a solo project because odds are better as a tight-knit like minded group IMO. Different people have different skills and weaknesses.
I want "enough", but not too much. So I've made plans for:
- 200 square foot THOW [max mobility, no privacy and near no storage]
- a 400 square foot park model [can move if you must, more than a single room]
- a roughly 1200 square foot quonset style home [2 bedrooms/1 bath, low maintenance, not too expensive, but you can't move it]
- a 1600 square foot quonset style home [still 2 bedrooms, but more space to spread out/more privacy, maybe a basement...also more $$$]
If it is just me then the first is possible, the second likely comfortable, and the third downright spacious. If my daughter is with me the first would be only okay for short term situations, the second possible, the third comfortable, and the fourth really nice.
I'm not sure if I would be best served by mobility or a secure fixed location. Too many variables...
I could see me being a gypsy towing my little house behind me going where the weather is fine and there is money to be made, or tucked away on some cozy edge somewhere doing little bits of this and that to pay the bills...growing strawberries and herbs, refinishing furniture, maybe having some sort of rental space.
I want my daughter to have a life of her own, but I also want to give her some sort of support or fallback position if things go south. And she is still really young.
I'm trying to broaden her horizons. As of now she is attached to some friend group around her age and her plan is for them to all get an apartment together and for her to get a job as an overnight stocker at a store. It's honest work, but c'mon...dream bigger kid.

I've seen two really good talks about relationships this week. This one IMO is fit for anyone, but what stuck with me was the assignment of quality hours to relationships.
"A best friend is someone you have spent 200 quality hours with."
Suggests when dating to consider "Would I like to spend 200 hours with this person?"
Another was "Are you pushing this person to develop and change to meet *their* goals, or to meet your goals?"
