This was always by far most likely what happened. The only other likely possibility would have been a European country without a lot of reliance on Russia's natural gas. One's brain has to be smoother than butter to believe Russia did it to themselves. Believing that means you can't even count to potato.

People underestimate the amount of deep cooperation that exists between the West, and the lengths to which they'll go to protect each other. What's Germany's liability if an external party is said to have breached NS2? What was its liability if it walked back the agreement? Etc. That's the trick to understanding this.

Germany should respond.

Russia can redirect their gas to China. Germany is cucked. Have to buy USA gas at any price now, and all industry is shuting down because it is not cost efective to produce anything without cheap gas. China has cheap gas so companies go there.

Poor and deindustrialzed germany is a good thing for Russia so don't expct them worry too much about that pipeline.

But they might cut transatlantic cables just for lolz. They will do this when they think it makes most damage to USA end EU. And they will probably say that it was done by same people who blown up the pipeline. Ie, not them

Trump brazenly called out the EU's dependence on Russian oil/gas. Of course, he did it in Trump fashion, so it got a lot of negative press, but note how seriously pissed off they got about it. Don't think that went un-noticed or was just what we saw on the surface. That was the one bargaining chip that Russia had with the rest of Europe. The rest of Europe haveing support or not supporting Ukraine or NATO in general has a huge effect on how not only Ukraine goes, but the course of thigns in the future.

You know... except that it wasthe single largest release of methane gas of estimates from 100,000 to 400,000 tons.

That's not exactly something to queef at for the usual chicken little crowd, so it's a little suspicious that this hasn't received much press, but they'll throw a fit because cows.
