Misc beat battle thread - Lion King special edition

Big thanks to Pengh for hosting the last battle. Time for another thread and hopefully we get some more of our regulars in this one - Metrobrah, Sprykee and Kormo I'm looking at you.

As always, the rules are pretty lax - Use the sample somewhere in the mix, add your own drums, bassline, extra sparkle etc, and have fun.

Nathaniel the Grublet - A Story (1979)

The track I chose is called 'In Direwood' -

For bonus points add in some of our very own Muzzlrpress singing a Disney classic!

Muzzlrpress singing Lion King-

If you don't make beats but would like to contribute feel free to rate our work.

Lets go!

I finally listened to the last ones over the weekend and the thing that stands out to me is how each of you have a completely different style. Love them all. I have a couple really artistically minded kids and I keep thinking I need to introduce them to beat battles.

Awesome! Definitely introduce them to beat battles, but maybe not the ones on the Misc.. Or the Misc at all

Fuark awesome! both you and Kormo used the vocal parts - I've cut those out completely thinking I couldn't do anything with them. I might need to rethink that. Awesome artwork for your track too

Thanks man! I was on the fence about the vocal part, but it grew on me. I like the creepy 1970s stage musical vibe it adds to the track.

Again, perfect choice of song for this battle, it's a sampling goldmine. Looking forward to hearing what you and Pengh make, as well as anyone else who wants to chime in.

Alright I just got off the phone with Eric Sermon, he told me to stop messing around and get back to work so here it is.

I tried to use the Lion king sample - I got the B B BBB and that high vocal sample from muzzlr. I feel like I could've tried harder but I need to get back to work lol

Very nice! Vocals fit well with the beat. Mirin! The beat is well made and mirin the bassline. That bass sound reminds me of UK grime basslines, very cool.

Cot damn that is FIRE. Love how you made a hook with the vocals. The vocal sounds so clean on top of the beat. Great production

Feeling this hard af. Sounds like a proper remix on that LP. Love that style of beat.

I can't believe you used that bomdigi track by E dub. It's very special to me. When I was 16 I bought a sh*tty gemini turntable and a mixer from Radio shack. One of the 1st records I had was that 12" single. I would mix that Acappella (same one as you used) over all kinds of beats I had on CD (only had 1 turntable the other fader went to CD player).

The thing is... whenever I am listening to a sample and trying to figure out the BPM, I rap (in my head) the words to that bomdigi "The E gets wicked"... and it gives me an idea if the sample works in the 95 BPM range. Been doing that 20 years lol

really feeling that beat. I could run with that all day

Thanks bro, appreciate it!

Took me a while to clean up that vocal line and make it sit nicely in the mix without clashing, with a lot of EQ trickery. Also, shoutout to the RX line of the Izotope plugins. They clean up audio like nothing else, specifically the "de-crackle" plugin in this instance.

I figured you processed the hell out of it. That's great. I almost splurged on a Izotope bundle a while back. Went with soundtoys instead. Doesn't do a lot of cleanup though as far as plug ins. All I have is a few different EQs and filters.

Oh man, Soundtoys VSTs are some of my most treasured plugins. Echoboy is one of the best delays I've ever used (including analog hardware delays) and Decapitator is a world class saturation plugin, sounds like you're overdriving a Neve console. But yeah, Izotope is a great company, revolutionary stuff.

Thanks bro, cool story too. I found the 12" for this in a second hand shop. I thought it was just one copy but it was a double (E double).

This is good.

I could see this being used is a T.V show or movie score.

Felt like I was watching some end credits or something lol.

That beat and the vocal samples mix together very well.

This reminds me of the type of rap/hip-hop I usually listen to srs.

Sick beat.

Bass is on point as usual, perfect. Also, that snare sample is insane man, what sample pack is that from? Or is it several snares layered together? Did you compress it much or was the sample already compressed? It has a great snap to it, plus a good dose of thump at around 200hz.

Thanks. Loved this sample at 1st but i lost my vibe early... I had Muzzler in my 1st project. I lost my mojo fiddling around with the damn sample too much (back on mon/tuesday night).... you guys ever do that? Mess around toooo much and lose the damn vibe? anyways... I like the 2nd half without the sample. Using the sample as an inspiration is what it's about

I have a drum rack kit in ableton that i collected for years. Samples from records or random findings online. Been the same one for years. I usually add a percussion loop on top. No idea. But i usually layer them and do some simple transient work on each them. Drums are usually my weaknesses.

I would love to start a new beat thread. Turnaround seems to be around a week for me lol.

:Edit: also yeah i play an electric guitar but i can't play chords for ****. I tune it in all 4ths (like a bass) and play it like a bassmainly for melodies. Still learning.

Yeah, that happens to me too. I'll overthink things and completely lose my flow. It usually leads to having to start over completely because I've destroyed my original idea lol.

Mirin guitar playing man, keep at it.

Yeah, don't worry about turnaround. Sounds like we're all pretty busy lately so a longer turnaround is understandable. Also, it's good to take your time and not let speed dictate the final product. Just submit it when you're happy with it.
