Government authorities in El Salvador are circulating some surreal images in order to prove to the nation and the world that they are cleaning up crime in a country that's currently under a state of emergency due to rampant murders and violent crime.

President Nayib Bukele has recently declared a "war on crime" and his message to gangs came in the form of publicizing 'shocking' video footage showing some 2,000 suspected gang members being huddled into a newly opened large prison using military tactics. Tens of thousands more suspected criminals have reportedly been rounded up. Watch below:

The footage has been met with some controversy, given there are allegations that innocent men may have been caught in the broad anti-gang dragnet.

Additionally, the police appear to be utilizing military prison tactics not seen since post 9/11 Gitmo images. According to international reports:

President Bukele tweeted that the first 2,000 people were transferred "at dawn, in a single operation" to the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism, which he says is the largest jail in the Americas.

"This will be their new house, where they will live for decades, all mixed, unable to do any further harm to the population."

The jail holds 14k inmates and they arrested 62k gang members last year? They must be putting 20 guys in a cell.

This won't solve anything. Guards will get compromised and still bring in cell phones and drugs to them, no matter how new or large the jail is. (Ded fkn Srs)

Would be quite hilarious if we started doing that here. If you go to jail or prison with a tattoo you get sent to a special place. Even as simple as those stupid roses or butterflies or paragraphs of writing people like to put on their rubs. They'll have plenty of time to be around people who actually GAF about tattoos and can swap their 'stories' with each other.

Bukele is a beast, every Salvadorian I've spoken to loves him and he's honestly done a hell of a job so far. One thing I'll never understand about the left is why they are so against punishing crime.

They don’t believe in free will or individual responsibility - everything is the result of society and, most recently, white people. It’s not the criminal’s fault they committed the crime, it was a failure of society, and that person should not be punished for the actions of society!

Crime has already dramatically reduced. It's not like an American jail where inmates human rights have to be respected and maintained. They might not stamp out one hundred percent because there is always the dodgy guard but they are making it very difficult for the inmates. No phones because the president ordered the phone companies to disable coverage to the prisons. And when there is a spike in crime on the outside, the inmates inside the prison get starved of food, along with other stuff like having their mattresses seized. They have no visitors or showers and confined to their cells 24/7.

Because phone coverage & visitors were banned, the inmates who were being released were caught having ate plastic with inscribed messages on, so the prisons banned plastics. Then they were caught flying a drone with a satellite to the prison because there was no coverage. He's doing things like sending 10,000 military police to a town and encircling it and rounding up anyone they think is a gang member.
Last year, El Salvador’s government reported that there were 496 homicides — a murder rate of about 8 per 100,000,which is lower than the United States for the first time on record.Back in 2015, El Salvador suffered 105 murders per 100,000, making it the most homicidal country on the planet.
