Greetings nerds and virgins, I am in need of your help, and I'll fellate you for good advice.


I've never cared about home theatres, I haven't watched anything other than sports on a TV in YEARSSSS, all of my gaming(both PC Consoles) are done on my monitor, as well as netflix/prime video/etc...

However all of that is changing since I'm moving into my new apartment with my gf (Don't worry Mgftp I'll DM you pics since I know you'll be asking) and with how our layout is, we decided we want to make a nice home threatre set up in our living room, and the PC is going into the den. I'm buying a PS5 this week as well, so those will be getting most of the TV use, as well as streaming movies obviously.

So please aware me on what I need to know about TVs, especially for gaming. I know almost nothing about TVs, I don't know wtf the difference between QLED, ULED, Ultra HD, etc...

1. Is 120hz a MUST HAVE for gaming? From the articles I've read, a lot of them said that even with a PS5/Xbox X, 60hz is fine unless you're doing competitive online chit, which I'm not.

2. Do I need it to have USB 2.1 in order to attain 4k?

3. Aware me on a solid sound bar.

4. For anyone who has cut out their cable, how do y'all watch sports besides streaming on some chitty free site? Are there packages I can get to still watch hockey and baseball on my TV without cable?



This is my dream choice TV, however I don't know if I feel like dropping $2100 at the moment with the sheer magnitude of all my other expenses I put into my new apartment this month.

2k might seem like alot for the budget, maybe it is, but honestly oled blows everything else away.

and on top of that the TV will have every modern/future connection you'll need.

60hz is not what you want as a gamer. ps5 and xsx both take advantage of 120hz and vrr in some games.

and i hate to say it but youll prob want a 65 inch unless you live in a closet. i got a 65 and regret not getting a 75.

i still usually buy TVs from costco using their citi visa card since they offer an extra 2 year extended warranty on top of factory and have the GOAT return policy.

Well I also wanted help with a sound barbut yes it's mostly about the TV.


I definitely do want the LG C2, I just need to suck it up and spend the extra grand.

After seeing freeburner with his horrible advice I will chime in and save you. Too many miscers are OLEDcels but OLED superiority on contrast is killed by ******t light. Unless you are a basement dweller or fine with blackout shades on all your windows during TV viewing you want a good LED, not OLED. Sony X95K is the clear king right now, however, 2023 models look like a significant upgrade (for LED and OLED) if you can wait. If you are a basement dweller LG is the most popular brand and probably the best mid range value but the Sony A95K is better if you aren't poverty.

You definitely want HDMI 2.1, high nit HDR, low input lag.

From what you have posted there I am assuming you aren't in the US (Canada?) and have different models or something but if you are looking for a budget placeholder set Hisense U8H is what it's called here is your best bet:https://www.amazon.com/Hisense-Mini-...0B5YZJD5V?th=1... Forget the OLED if you aren't basement dwelling. TCL is a close 2nd to Hisense for a budget set. Keep in mind going up to a Sony X95k is going to get you much better quality (especially for HDMI 2.1 gaming), and reliability. I'd say Hisense and TCL are getting close to matching the top brands but they aren't there yet. Perhaps their higher end 2023 models will make it.




As far as sports, I am not gay or 90 years old so don't watch baseball. Hulu Disney package or whatever it is called includes ESPN and that gives me the majority of what I need for sports. When playoffs come around I will get something light Sling for a couple months.

The living room in the new apartment is surrounded by large windows, so definitely going to be a chit ton of ******t lighting.

I might get a cheaper Hisense for right now and look into the Sony later on, as right now the X95K is $3000-3500CAD.

Mgftp isn't wrong about oled and ******t light but most normal people don't watch TV all day long. Do you sit around and watch TV alot during the day? I have my oled in my well lit living room and I spent a few dollars on dark curtains to control the lighting. I would never get a led TV again. I'd rather make the effort to control the lighting with curtains and have the superior picture quality and low input lag and features of oled. When it's dark out, not an issue at all.


Mgftp genuinely wouldn't know the difference? How would he? He doesn't have an oled and has never set one up in his living room unless I am mistaken. He constantly calls oleds basement dweller tvs when 99 percent of the people here will agree with me that once they go oled, they won't go back to led. I wouldn't listen to someone who doesn't have first hand experience about Oleds. If you don't want to take my word, maybe more people who went from led to oled can give their opinion. Either way, the beauty of Costco is that you can try it and return it if you don't like it.




But on the other hand if you get a cheaper TV you can use the saved money to get a much better audio setup.

Sound bars are dog chit. All of them. Unless you spend a fortune, but why the fuk would you spent thousands on a sound bar.

My genuine advice: Get the thousand dollar TV, put the rest into a future proof reciever and 2 solid bookshelf speakers. Audio does not change like TV tech does, you will have your speakers for years and years. You can start with 2 bookshelf speakers and add channels as you please, and if the speakers are good I promise they will sound better than any soundbar. When you end up in your own home you'll be glad you got a real speaker setup. And if you like to listen to music, nothing is better then a solid 2.0 or 2.1. Maybe skip the subwoofer since it's an apartment.

I have never owned one so wouldn't know is a retard level take. I see the chit brightness specs and reviews for OLEDs. I don't need to own a V8 pick-up truck to know the gas mileage is chit.

Most content is just fine. The only chit too dark in the daytime is hdr and dolby vision stuff. I don't sit around watching TV all day so it's no issue to simply close my curtains in the once every few month event I watch a Blu ray in the middle of the daytime. Oh no, I missed two hours of sunlight, the world is gunna end... I'm watching a movie anyways, so who gives a fuk lmao it's not like I'm outside enjoying the sun either way.

You simply don't know because you haven't experienced it for yourself. Period. I'm sure it does bother professional reviewers, but for most people it's not that bad. Curtains are a small price to pay for superior quality.

just get the samsung QD-OLED version, it can get bright

i'm fine with my LG OLED CX tho, I don't even have it at max brightness i think its at 70% oled light and this is during the day. I'm also used to using my computer monitors, working and gaming at color calibration levels of 120cm/2 brightness which often is around 30% brightness on "most' monitors.. so yea


i say get the OLED or QD-OLED and because it will last you.. just think about how often you buy TVs, get the right one and you won't be upgrading so often.. OLED/QD-OLED is the only good TV tech til we get the end game MICRO-LED tv's.. but thats still like 8-10 years away to get to the consumer level.

Missing the point completely. I'm not saying you're wrong. Facts are facts, led is better for a bright room. I'm saying it's something that is better experienced for yourself, because most reviewers blow it out of proportion and for most people in their everyday life its completely fine. Simply listening to reviewers instead of experiencing it first hand is just your own loss. I'm the type willing to bring a tv home, try it, and bring it back if it doesn't work out. That's why Costco is best for TV purchases, imo. Simply writing off Oleds because your favorite reviewer said they are too dim during the day is bad advice, period. Try for yourself instead of constantly giving biased advice.

I don't nerd out on TV's. I go to RTINGS and see what the best I can buy for my budget is at the time I'm buying. Plain and simple. So I'm not much help overall.


But anyway - I wouldn't get a 55" unless your viewing distance is like 5 feet. 100% serious.

Have a 70" currently (or maybe it's 75", don't even remember) and it seems small in my living room.

I have a 75 inch Samsung with a Onkyo TX-NR595 7.2 Channel......PSB tower speakers for front ....and Klipsch back speakers and sub woofer. Shakes the house.

Crazy how 20 years ago you were mogging everyone with a 42 inch tv, and doing pretty well with a 32 incher. Nowadays you're on dat poverty time with anything less than 65 inches

120 hz isnt a must have, but it's extremely nice to have. A lot of games these day's are bringing in vrr and it's the best way to at least try and experience the best middle ground in terms of graphics + performance. If you have a friend/relative with a tv with vrr, you can do go demo the console on their tv to see if vrr is worth it for you. Personally I love being able to have games run in a "balanced" mode without being stuck to the usual 30. Some people may prefer the locked 30/60 ... But I feel like VRR gives you more options and as a gamer and with dev's fukin up performance a lot of the times, vrr is a good third option. It works well in single player games too, not just MP.

Horizon/Plague Tale/Dying Light 2 were all a lot better with vrr imo.

Here's my setup, which is pretty simple. Might give you some ideas. I'll list in Canadian prices too since you are in BC.

TV:
- 55" LG C1, bought on sale for $1600 on Amazon canada. Didn't need a 65". I just sat closer to the TV. Wait until the LG C2 drops to about this price. Should be closer to Black Friday. Also follow RedFlagDeals forums for TV drops
- I got an Ikea "Lack Shelf" for $24 to put under it because the stand is way too low. And a soundbar blocks the IR receiver.

Audio:
- Sonos Beam Gen2 soundbar with
- Two Sonos One SL as rear surrounds, got both for about $850. Used a 15% discount code I got from Kijiji.
(You can substitute the One SLs for Ikea Symphonisks which are cheaper)
- Sonos Sub Mini - about $600 from Bestbuy. A sub is honestly not even necessary. You can get away without it. I added the Sub Mini but it hasn't really blown me away.

I have pretty big windows opposite my TV, but I have curtains to block out the light. It's not even a big deal. I don't know why dudes in here are acting like curtains on your windows are like forbidden LMAO

I also barely ever watch TV during the day so the OLED is perfect for me. I'm too busy during the day. By the time I finish work and make dinner, it's already dark outside. And on weekends when I do watch or game during the day, I've had no issues with the brightness. I think people over exaggerate the whole "OLEDS ARE NOT GOOD IN DAYTIME" thing. Ive had an OLED since Nov.2021 and it's been fine. I wouldn't even let anyone scare you into thinking OLEDs are too dim. They are amazing. No ragerts.

Cliffs:
LG OLED + Sonos Beam Gen2 is perfect setup for apartment/condo. Full blown receiver setup for audio is too much clutter and wires for an apartment. And you're never going to blast that thing full on anyways.

We get ripped off hard here in Canada. Exchange rate is straight up trash. We don't see the same discounts as american bruhsI don't know if you have ever listened to a proper Sonos wireless system in a good room (not at costco), but they are pretty damn good for a soundbar.

He lives in an apartment. 75" is freaking overkill for a smaller space. I would wait until the 4K short throw laser projectors become more mainstream and drop in price. They are not really worth getting now.

I would take a 55" OLED over a 75" LCD with light bleeds and poor viewing angles anyday.

OP you don't want the nerds and virgins ruining your thread because they overdo it. You're a newb and you need basic advice. Also, you need someone who has experience with how these sets look so lemme give it to you straight.

I got two new TVs. A Samsung QLED(basically LED) and LG OLED. Both TVs are high end and despite what nerds say are both extremely great TVs. Far better than what your average person will use, and there's no clear winner because each has their advantages and drawbacks.

So here's the thing. Based on your uses for the TV: a mix of gaming, sports, regular TV and movies... As well as the lighting situation in your room I do not suggest an OLED TV. It's probably an entertainment area for your gf and family/friends to enjoy so you don't want to baby your set.

I would get the most affordable Hisense or TCL that support these: 65" (trust me), 4K LED (basically non-OLED), 120hz and HDMI 2.1 port.

As for sound, I'd take freeburner's advice with the speaker setup.
