Oklahoma GOP seeks to supress voter initiatives.

If the Republican voters of Oklahoma hold opinions that do not coincide with the desires of GOP lawmakers, the GOP lawmakers will try to make it more difficult for their Republican constituents to practice their rights according to the Oklahoma constitution.

If you don't agree with us we'll make it so you can't disagree.
Several Oklahoma lawmakers are looking to add hurdles for citizen-led groups to pass the type of state questions that legalized medical marijuana, expanded Medicaid and won voter support despite Republican leaders’ opposition in recent years.

More than a dozen bills up for consideration, all authored by GOP legislators, seek to either stiffen requirements for citizen-led voter initiatives to get on the ballot or increase the threshold for some of the proposals to pass on election day. [...]

This follows the passage of several high-profile state questions opposed by the governor and many in the GOP-dominated Legislature.

Since 2016, voters through citizen-led initiatives have expanded Medicaid to more than 200,000 low-income Oklahomans, changed several drug and nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and made Oklahoma one of the nation’s largest and most accessible medical marijuana markets. [...]

State Rep. Carl Newton, R-Waynoka, [...] is a co-sponsor on a House proposal seeking to ban out-of-state campaign contributions for state question campaigns.

“Do we need New York, California or some state out there sending in a bunch of money trying to influence our elections?” he said. “I just think Oklahomans should support Oklahomans.”

Newton said he doesn’t think candidates — who often receive big donations from out-of-state companies or political action committees — should have the same restriction.

I am sharing this to find out what GOP miscers think about GOP lawmakers attempting to undermine the voices of their GOP constituents when those constituents do not agree with their lawmakers.

This is becoming common in several Republican states. The party is waging a war against voters.

I love how it's always a bunch of sheep screeching about the other side doing the same exact thing their side is doing.

Same for the right, so dont cry about that.

Term limits is the solution.

I lived in Altus when I was a kid. The kids were great, the adults.. not so much. Super racist. Most of my friends moved to Texas when they became adults because OK was so bad. I heard the town is full of meth heads and hard druggies now. Probably typical in red poor states though.

But I do have to admit, baseball and football there was the best.

Do you have an opinion on the Oklahoma GOP attempting to stifle the rights of the voters of Oklahoma, whom are overwhelmingly registered as Republican?

What a weird way to frame banning out of state campaign contributions for state question campaigns.

This is a good thing for Oklahoma, and should be the case everywhere. Imagine allowing outside people to influence your elections. No shock that the peanut gallery is up in arms about it.

Then why should those running for office be allowed to receive out-of-state contributions? Please explain how that is ok while the other is not.

Because I wanted to narrow in on your attempt to undermine the thread with some ridiculous reference to sheep. Now that that is out of the way, how do you suppose term limits will alleviate the problem that is lawmakers acting against the will of their constituents?

But you are being a sheep here. You saw an article and "baaa republicans bad" without realizing this happens across the board.

Term limits will create a much better candidate pool. It screens better for the ****gits doing it just for power/money. I'm not saying I have the perfect solution, just a solution.

They shouldn't. I'm in favor of ending that too.

But this is a nice first step. Nothing more toxic than when people like Soros or Kock can spends millions to subvert elections. And all these politicians have to bend the knee or lose. Get outside money out of elections and allow people to compete more fairly.

I live in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is a red state, not even close to being a democrat, left leaning state. Democrats have very little influence in this state. This topic is not about what democrats are doing in other states. You referring to me as a sheep for discussing republican politics in a state where the majority of voters are republicans is misplaced.

I suspect you are capable of offering an opinion without trying to undermine the OP.

Could be, although if an elected lawmaker sees a short future ahead they might be more inclined to push through laws with greater haste.

What do you want me to say, "omg republicans bad" ? yeah, ok, republicans bad, democrats bad, we need term limits. I thought that was clear.

Possible. It's a start, though. I'm sure if there was a legit think tank started we could find some viable options.

That is one facet of the restrictions being suggested. The reason I included it in the quote in the OP is because the GOP lawmaker that suggested it went on to say he should be excluded from those not allowed to receive out of state donations. It is typical of the Oklahoma GOP - we can have access to outside help, you may not.

I am upset about this because those with power seek to stifle the voices of the people that voted for them.

The people who voted....live in-state.

These include proposals to:

• Require a majority of voters in two-thirds of Oklahoma counties to vote for some state questions to take effect statewide.

• Mandate background checks for petition circulators.

• Block out-of-state donations for initiative or referendum campaigns.

So the politicians can get outside money but not anyone else? Why should the people of OK be subjected to laws proposed by politicians affected by outside money?

Out of state residence and illegal immigrants are not constituents. The politicians are not representative of those individuals.

That said, allowing out of staters to donate and support candidates is not representation. It should be illegal to accept donations from anyone they don’t represent.

I support this for federal elections too. For example, Bill Clinton received millions of donations from China. How the f*** is that legal, and why wasn’t he busted for it? Pretty sure that’s foreign interference of US elections.

My only objection to the three items you listed would be to the requirement for a background check on petition circulators. I believe we already have a law that forbids non-residents from participating in signature collection. I do not see a mandatory background check as being anything other than an easy route to reject signatures.

I am looking at some data that I will update the thread with momentarily.
