What am i suppose to do at a funeral?

Never went to a funeral before, Someone in my extended family died not sure if I should go.

>My first cousins husbands mother died.

>I only saw the mother and my cousin during Thanksgivings. Otherwise, I aint close with the family.

Do people get invited to funerals or is it something you inquire about yourself?

> I only know 2 of the mothers children, she has 5-7 kids.

> I've met some of em years and years ago. I messaged the other child (she’s my age) because I also see her during Thanksgiving to give my condolences, and she asked if I was going to the funeral? Tf that mean? Is that like an invite?

If I go, I won't know anyone there/I'll be solo. The funeral aint anywhere near me, like an hour drive. Not sure what to do?

Also, if I do go, what should I tell people that I've met once/twice? Just “sorry for your loss”?

People are not usually invited to funerals, usually they are announced and people show up, or dont.

idk what religion were they. I went to one and it was basically just about of religious stuff then followed by friends of the deceased talking about them. i was invited but i don't necessarily think you need to be invited if it's at a church and the family says not to. the one i went to like 500 people showed up to which was nuts to me. was standing for 4 hours

Around 2 weeks I went to the funeral for one of my friends who died tragically. You typically don't need to be invited to one, usually there is an advertisement in the newspaper or on the funeral site with details and you show up. If the family doesn't want someone to go, they typically have to have the arrangements for that like private security.

I was one of the speakers/eulogists so I had to get there early, but otherwise get there 20 minutes or so before the official start of the service, and really just sit there and listen to the service. Afterwards, you'll stand whilst the coffin is carried out to the hearse, you wait inside whilst the family say their goodbyes outside, and you go to the wake afterwards which could be at the venue or at another place like the family's house.


As for socializing, just talk in a hushed and sympathetic tone and apologize for their loss. Showing up is a gesture in and of itself which the family should appreciate. I hope you never have to go for someone who's really close to you though, for me, reading the eulogy and carrying the coffin was gut-wrenching.

The prescribed speakers are organized ahead of time and by the family, usually. It's usually family, close friends and possibly colleages or confederates the deceased was close with. Randos or distant family members definitely don't hop up and speak on a whim.
