I made the thread because I don't have much experience in this. It's a long time friend, down on his luck the past few months.

But I recall a bunch of people I know saying, years ago "never loan money to friends" - same as "don't go into business with friends". Yet it seems like it should be easier, than say someone paying back 3500 bucks over two years, right?

That's what interests me. Almost no one here says "Yeah of course (period)".

Yeah, screw it. I sent the funds, we have a written agreement that it'll be paid back by August.

Time will tell I guess.

He did pay me back a total of 4000$ over the course of that loan, but the extra 500$ wasn’t really worth it for the headache..

This was one of those rare things where we were friends outside of work as well, knew his family and whatnot, so it made it even weirder.

It depends upon the friend or family member I suppose.

I've only seen personal loans turn out bad for the person that did the loaning. A recent example I heard of was one neighbor loaned a good amount of money to another neighbor. The neighbor that borrowed did not pay back the money. He and his wife are still having money problems. And the neighbor that loaned the money has now placed a lien upon the borrowers home. He will eventually get his money back but only after the house has been sold.

You might point your friend to a bank to borrow from. Or there are those places that advertise "it is your money, do what you want with it." If the insurance company is likely to eventually pay out someday one of these companies might work with your friend, for a price of course.

Might be fine. In any event you'll find out how well you really know him.

I borrowed money from my parents to buy my first house. I had good credit and could have gone through a bank, but they had the funds available sitting in an account earning very little interest. We had a written agreement at basically the going rate for mortgages at the time. It was good for everyone - they got more interest than they would have otherwise, I avoided all the loan origination fees.

Yeah, none of this ever happened. Your entire story is completely made up. No idea why anyone takes you seriously. Post some sort of proof of this immense wealth you claim to have.

Literally nothing about it makes any sense. If you had $12k+ to loan to a "friend" without it rustling your own financial situation in the slightest, then you'd be ballin' so hard you wouldn't have ever thought to stop and ask these questions. You'd just do as you felt like doing and go about your day without the attention seeking misc bullchit ever coming into the equation.

Like I'm sure everyone has said - you can't "loan" it or your friendship is over. Gift it if you want. Hopefully when he's on his feet he will just repay you out of gratitude.

Yeah, but even that - charging a friend interest? Had you guys agreed on a payment date? I'll get the 12k back by the end of August, and won't accept interest tbh. He can take me out for a beer or something, heh.

I'm not sure what has happened in your life that makes you so bitter, beyond your divorce. Do you get upset when other people post threads and conversations? Or is this forum meant to be purely at your beck and call - to preach the doom and gloom LDAR rot you're so famous for?

My advice is: if someone doing well in life irritates you, look inside to see why that irritates you so much. Because your irritation says a lot about you, and not about the persons you're flailing to attack. Hope this helps.

You are unlikely to ever see the $120 you loaned to your friend and if/when you press him about fulfilling his end in August, expect him to react poorly to it. No big deal, $120 is not a lot of money, but just learn that any money you loan to friends or family is money you probably will not see again. The problem, it's entirely on them to step up. You can't pressure a friend to repay you the $120 you lent and if you do, they'll get hostile.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

DO NOT cosign. Better to give the money or loan it yourself. My mom cosigned on a car loan for my brother and it took her from excellent credit to ruined credit.

I've gifted money to my mom and also loaned her money for a car after cosigning for my brother ruined her credit. She paid me back. I've also borrowed from my dad to repair a home that had been wrecked by renters so that we could sell it and I paid him back + a little extra when the sale closed. I owe some money to my in-laws right now which I expect to pay back whenever my daughter turns 18 or I sell this house.

But that's me- miss high credit score -not my brother.

There are people on this forum who pull multiple 7-figures per year brah and they receive no hate for it, I'm not derailing the conversation further by digging into the reasons underlying this difference.

You made a specific claim earlier, and now you're backtracking already. If you're going to call me out, bring something to the table. But recall: (i) some of the wealthier Miscers have met me here in NYC; (ii) I decide when and what I share, not you.

I suggest you look at your ego issue - there are plenty of posters on this forum who have no problem with Me at all, and others (like yourself and a few other posters on this forum) who can't seem to reconcile my existence with their insecurity complexes. But that's a you problem, see? As you're already aware.

Funny how Doodhy followed LL around the forum in this thread. It's similar to how elterrible follows SS. Also funny how this thread is made after LL supposedly gave Doodhy $40 for a transcript that never came.

Even in your relationships (you seem like a principled guy) - if you loan to friends or family you wouldn't see any of it back? It was 12k, by the way, not 120. I mentioned his house fire etc.

What sort of "friend" asks for a loan, and has no intention of paying it back?

It's also funny how LL thinks playing the "well some miscers have seen proof of my immense wealth, but no I won't ever post any proof of it, and you're a big jealous dum dum if you don't just take my word for it" card after getting called out on the blatant frauding was somehow clever on his end. The "you're just jealous, lulz" bullchit was played out over a decade ago, and this idiot still thinks it's viable in 2023. Just lmao.

The "you're just jealous, lulz" bullchit was played out over a decade ago, and this idiot still thinks it's viable in 2023. Just lmao.
I'm used to people like you, don't worry. You're a bitter forum dweller, another one of those 'dying gay indian forum' types, but with an ego like you're some kind of forum all-star. Let me be clear: people like me have nothing to prove to you, or your ilk. Get it? This thread was about loaning money to friends, and you only joined it to cry about your life, and to act as if you're in some position to "call me out".

You can't call me out: you're a fu*king loser. But you know this, as does this entire forum. Anything else? lol

Altmaxxing pieces of chit.
It's hard to imagine these late 2022 and 2023 join dates aren't all the same person. Or maybe the common character traits are the reasons they were previously banned and only emerged after the forum opened up again, that feels plausible too

Look at OP's defensiveness in here lol

There is a middle ground between simping and actively bagging on someone. And it wasn't necessarily just directed at you...in general if something really irritates you in others it is worth taking a beat to figure out why that is.

IDK, maybe you just like being mad. Some people do.

Projection.

Also, if you truly feel that I "actively bag on you", then you've got issues. 90% of my posts towards you over the years have been positive in nature, and I'm not a complete asssshole about it when I do disagree with you about something either.
